Starbucks Coffee Company

Barista

June 2019 • Perry Hall, MD

What I liked

It is fast paced and a fun environment to work in. I love my coworkers and the job itself is never boring. I really enjoy making all the different drinks and making customer connections. The benefits for this company are fantastic and very accommodating for all different circumstances people may be going through.

What I wish was different

The training is a bit rigorous and may be overwhelming for some people. However, my coworkers really helped me out and taught me and guided me through anything I was uncertain of.

Advice

Do not let the first couple of weeks scare you away. It is a lot of information to take in and learn, but you will adapt quickly and pick things up.

What I liked

The environment was great, everyone liked working there, the atmosphere was really great !

What I wish was different

It’s exhausting, the 8+ hour shifts are really harsh on the body, since we stand up the entire time, but you get used to it.

Advice

Learn how to think and act fast. When a lot of people come in you need to know what to do in a quick second, and be able to do everything fast and well.

Head Barista Trainer and Shift Supervisor

September 2018 - August 2019 • Westlake, OH

What I liked

I learned a lot about how to manage a large team of people from both a training and a daily operations viewpoint. I learned how to evaluate employees in order to help them build on their personal growth, encourage team building, and provide emotional support to others.

What I wish was different

The job was really emotionally demanding. I felt all the time that there was pressure from Starbucks culture-building within the company that I had to adhere to a certain standard of attitude, which can be very draining to some people. Sometimes I failed to address this properly within myself and a lot of times I had to help other people hold themselves accountable for speaking up when they needed some support.

Advice

Look for positions that will help you develop skills as well as provide experience for your career path. I am a film major but working as a supervisor and training people for a company that has such a strong history of identity and culture taught me a lot of skills I can take into directing and producing.
