Beauty Team Member

September 2015 • Highland, IN

What I liked

The ability to work with a company that values my opinion and allows me to utilize my skills to help our guests and create repeat business.

What I wish was different

I wish the hours had been different. Summer hours are not guaranteed and I would have like to option to work a 40 hour week.

Advice

I would encourage individuals not to pre-judge working in retail. I think too often it is assumed that the work will be too hard or too difficult. However, I have really enjoyed working with not only my fellow team members, but our guests as well.

Manufacturing Operations Manager

June - August 2018 • Stuarts Draft, VA

What I liked

I loved the opportunity that it gave me, the learning experience on the job is where I learned the most from.

What I wish was different

The only thing is the hours, but other than that it was an incredible management and leadership experiencship.

Advice

Just be cautious of the hours, know that you will learn a lot as long as you’re willing to give up hours during the summer.

Logistics

January 2017 • Portland, OR

What I liked

The amount of variation in a day to day routine while working here allows me to stay sharp and teaches me a lot about adaptation.

What I wish was different

There are times where I think a conventional work routine may help gather myself together after enduring such unpredictability.

Advice

The most important bit of advice I can give is that like any other job, being able to adapt to a changing work scenario is a key quality that most employers desire in employees.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask a lot of questions and get to know your team and the other interns! There's a lot to do in the city, and I didn't have a dull moment while I was there. Be open with your manager, too -- there are a lot of resources if you aren't getting what you want/need.

Cashier

September 2016 - August 2018 • Stevens Point, WI

What I liked

The people I worked with were friendly and helpful, and always full of interesting stories to pass the down time and make me enjoy my job. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the pay was good.

What I wish was different

I wish those in higher positions were more prompt on their responses regarding questions I had or problems that arose. Sometimes I felt like I mattered and they were listening, and then other times I felt like I went unheard.

Advice

It's a job in retail. That sums up the experience, basically. I would advise that you ensure you can handle all manner of customers that are going to come through your lane and are willing and able to greet each of them with a smile.

Operations Manager

June - August 2018 • DeKalb, IL

What I liked

I was able to learn so much due to Target's trust in allowing me to take on every role a real Operations Manager would have. I was able to gain leadership experience by managing 100 team members along with strategy experience by running the system for a 12 hour shift.

What I wish was different

There could have been more upfront communication in regards to scheduling. I did not receive my schedule until a couple weeks prior, and the same situation would occur with accepting full time.

Advice

A huge factor of this internship that you won't find elsewhere is the level of leadership experience that comes from managing 100 people. It is a huge responsibility, but if it isn't one of your favorite aspect of the job then Operations Management might not be the right fit.

Sales associate

July 2017 - September 2018 • Norwalk, CA

What I liked

I like the environment. Coming into work was always fun and exciting. I had the privilege of being taught different areas around the store, and was able to pick up new abilities. Everyday would be different coming from cashiering to helping with online orders.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to learn more areas at Target. I wish I was able to learn things like setting the mannequins or being able to set up the store during the holidays. Perhaps be able to closer to more of the leaders in the different departments.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is to be open to different positions offered. There's a ton of positions available and they each have something positive, about them. Get along with your coworkers and the leaders they make the experience ten times more enjoyable.

Seasonal Packer

June - August 2018 • Fridley, MN

What I liked

I liked the employee environment and the job was fairly simple.

What I wish was different

I wish the human resources got more involved with the employee's because the communication from HR to the Team leads were terrible. Had they fixed this issue I believe people wouldn't be so irritated or confused. I also did not how socially awkward the Team Leader was.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about my experience working during the summer for Target is that before you apply for a summer job make sure you know ALL of the occupations duties and most importantly how much you get paid compared to other positions.
