Cashier

April 2018 • Jackson, MI

What I liked

Being able to interact with people and all the positivity from my coworkers and customers.

What I wish was different

To have more involvement in making the place a great space for all employees to be creative and have fun.

Advice

You have to be patient and kind. This is a very social job and needs 100% effort. It is very fun when you put that effort in.

Executive Intern

June - August 2018 • Mount Vernon, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the ability to apply my classroom knowledge to a real life experience. It was different than an office job, which placed me outside of my comfort zone and challenged me to learn faster, manage a wider range of personalities, and navigate sticky situations with tact.

What I wish was different

I do wish I was able to have a more independent experience. The majority of the summer was spent shadowing, which I feel didn't allow me to bloom on my own. Though I created projects of my own, progress was quickly overwritten as it is a retail store - guests move things about, and the floorplan is constantly changing. Further, I feel there wasn't a consistent sense of direction, although a schedule was provided.

Advice

Go in with an open mind, and don't let the type of work weigh on you. Learn as much as you can. Who knows? You may find you love it.

Sales Floor Team Member - Hardlines

May 2018 • Northfield, MN

What I liked

I like the fast-paced, interactive and friendly work environment and opportunities to work on a variety of different mini-projects (i.e. price change, presentation/sales plans). The store executive and team leaders are very supportive and encouraging. Flexible hours.

What I wish was different

It would be nice to have more team leaders across all departments.

Advice

Be outgoing and engage with Target Guests! One thing Target offers that online shopping doesn't is face-to-face guest service, and you are encouraged to interact with guests often to increase sales. Have a can-do attitude.

Barista

September 2017 • Lakeville, MN

What I liked

I liked that I was able to try something different and to learn new skills that I never knew I was capable of. I learned to work really fast without forgetting something, and learning how to make all kinds of drinks.

What I wish was different

I wish they'd have schedules that were student-friendly. I wish I was able to work while in school, and it not interfere with my school work.

Advice

A piece of advice I give is to be patient with yourself, and learn on your own pace. Never to be hard on yourself, and find the fun in what you do to make the process of learning easier.

The manager staff because at times they were really disorganized and it became frustrating.

Advice

Barista Trainer

September 2017 • Loveland, CO

What I liked

I love all my coworkers and the simplicity of starbucks' recipes. The fast pace is fun and learning all the new drinks makes the learning and training ongoing.

What I wish was different

Starbucks customers tend to be extremely picky about their orders which makes your life often complicated and dealing with customer complaints can be difficult. The management of target was condescending, but my direct manager was amazing and did a great job of working as a buffer between us and the corporate managers. Also, the 10% team member discount is pretty disappointing when considering the 6% tax in the area.

Advice

If you are considering a job at target, I would recommend working on the sales floor, rather than being a barista in Starbucks or being a cashier. Sales floor is less repetitive and more project based. Also, as a sales floor team member, you d not often have to deal with guest complaints.
