Lockheed Martin

Optical Engineering Intern

June 2018 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

The people I work with here are all fantastic and make the experience great! And the hours are very flexible.

What I wish was different

I wish the drive wasn't so far, but that's no fault of the program obviously.

Advice

Apply as soon as possible - they pull resumes from a big pool, so the sooner you're in it the better your chances of getting selected.

Contracts

July 2019 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

I Love the professional environment and how I actually felt like an asset to the team. Not just an ‘intern’

What I wish was different

If they would give me more opportunity to grow this into a career. It is very hard to network and make connections in this particular environment. Wish I could know if I would get a job offer after graduation. Very unknown

Advice

There is a lot of competition, it is very hard to land a full time position with them. Even being a CWEP can’t guarantee you a job after graduation.

Safety Intern

May 2019 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

I never did any of the “intern duties” like checking dates, making copies, or anything like that. They trusted me from the beginning and have been really supportive of all my work. It is fast pace and exciting, you are not stuck behind a desk all day.

What I wish was different

First year of such a large intern group, could have been a little more organized

Advice

Be willing to be comfortable talking with others and getting to know LOTS of people.

Logistics Intern

May - August 2019 • Luke Air Force Base, AZ

What I liked

I was able to learn a lot about the aeronautical industry, specifically how it pertains to the Air Force. I had no prior military experience or background going into the role. I was also given a lot of freedom in where I wanted to be posted for the time of my internship to ensure that I was happy with my experience.

What I wish was different

The only thing I might have wished to be different would be for my major to have played a little more focus in my role at LM. I say this because the opportunity to experience something more targeted to my major may have helped me decide what exactly I would like to gear my application efforts to after graduation. However, I knew when I took the position that there were not going to be a lot of opportunities available to me regarding my major.

Advice

Don't turn down an awesome opportunity just because it doesn't fit perfectly into your plan. You may end up learning that your interests expand beyond just one tight knit focus. Taking this opportunity solidified my choices for my minors and is influencing what I may choose to do for my career and potentially my Master's degree.

Financial Analyst Intern

May - August 2019 • Denver, CO

What I liked

Promoted a learning environment. Got exposure to many different business sectors at Lockheed Space. Got the opportunity to shadow various business leaders.

What I wish was different

Had the opportunity to be more hands on in some projects/ tasks.

Advice

Lockheed stresses the important of learning and educating over completing menial tasks for interns. It was a great first internship to learn about the operations of the corporate world.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

Autonomy Intern

May - August 2019 • Stratford, CT

What I liked

Really interesting work if you like implementing theory in software. They put interns on tasks that they would do themselves at some point, so if you return for another internship, you might see your project in use. None of the tasks are high priority so it's not a big deal if you didn't get to finish what you were doing. Get to see cool helicopters and how they are made.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known about the move to Trumbull ahead of time and that the recruiter was more communicative. I also wish that everything was ready for interns when we got there.

Advice

As much as I hate to say it, getting a job most places is all about connections. If you have a connection, you can more or less guarantee yourself a job. That being the case, make sure to make a good impression while working anywhere as an intern. You're there only for a short period of time, so put in 110% effort to impress your manager and senior engineers. People like working with people they can depend on, so be that person.

What I liked

Excellent company to work for, numerous domestic and international full time opportunities. Lockheed Martin invests in employees in the form of professional development and networking opportunities.

IT Operations Intern

June - August 2019 • Stratford, CT

What I liked

I loved the company culture, I learned a ton, and I got to work on some really awesome projects.

What I wish was different

I took a couple weeks to get up to speed and get access to necessary tools (software, hardware, etc.) to begin working, but thats to be expected from almost any internship.

Advice

I'd say the most important thing for an internship is to try to jump on any project your given and take all the opportunities presented to you, even if you feel like you might not have enough experience or it's out of your comfort zone - this is the best way to learn the most.

Advice

Apply to as many jobs as you can and take a risk in accepting.

Electrical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Manassas, VA

What I liked

I got to work side by side with full time engineers on a team that is designing a new product for the company. Tasks that we could take on were really flexible but still added actual value to the team. There was an intern program with lots of informational sessions, both technical and career driven

What I wish was different

During the summer that I interned with LM, a lot of the design was already laid out from years of testing and development and I didn’t get to fully experience that process

Advice

When you do an internship, it’s hard to get work you enjoy if you never express what you’re interested in. Often times, employees are really supportive in giving you the best experience as long as you ask!
