What I liked

My favorite part of my internship was when I got to go on a supplier visit to San Jose, California. We toured the other company’s floor and I was able to help run the meeting.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more confident coming in. You are chosen for a reason and you do have the necessary skill set for that job. Do not be discouraged because you are working around professionals because you are a professional in training.

Make friends! I had so much fun this summer and met so many great people.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Transitioning anywhere out of college isn't easy, but every manager at Lockheed had the "open door policy", and it was incredibly easy to stop in and ask a quick question.

Enterprise Operations Supply Chain Management Intern

What I liked

I loved how hands on the experience was, as well as the workplace culture. The workplace culture promoted a sense of importance, as well as community. This was the perfect ‘first internship experience’ as I learned the ins and outs of being in a professional environment.

What I wish was different

The only semi-negative going into the internship was the very vague job description.

Advice

Be confident from day one. Ask people their names when they you you shake their hand.

What I liked

I told my manager I was interested in project management and he basically had me shadow a project with a really strong PM. It helped me realize the in depth questions that PM’s have to answer to help plan. I also helped them with other management aspects, made presentations, and helped the team integrate new tools.

What I wish was different

It was slow at times. I probably should have asked for work, but I thought they would just give it to me. It was an office setting, so I was sitting at a desk for 9 hours a day (yes 9, they have a different scheduling system, which I liked actually).

Advice

People always say “ask questions, we’re here to help”. It can be hard to come up with questions but at the least, ask them how they got where they are today. It can help you find your path, or at least ease your mind that paths aren’t always direct, they curve. On another note, I’d say to take advantage of the benefits and find out as much as you can about tuition reimbursement, leadership programs, and other things that could benefit you for the future.

Company structure of the internship too rigid. Wish that internship presentation or ratings by unaffiliated employees outside of my work team were unnecessary and distracting.

Keep an open mind. Take whatever work you are given even if it's outside your expectations or realm of expertise/education

I wish they had given me a bit more regular work. I was given tasks at random so there was times I had not much to do and other times I had alot that didnt last.

Ask a lot of questions. People are always willing to help and dont expect you to know everything off the bat.

I learned a new programming language and had some flexibility on what I worked on. I also got to interact with shop floor operators to analyze processes and discover bottlenecks.

What I wish was different

I would have liked more structure to what I was supposed to work on. A number of days were spent trying to find enough work for me to stay busy.

Advice

Be prepared to spend a few weeks waiting on the bureaucratic processes required to get your computer and software set up.

Sometimes a lot of luck is involved in the job hunt, but the Brandeis name will catch the eyes of a lot of recruiters.

Software Engineer Intern

What I liked

Pay was good and my team was doing good work. The location was nice and so was the gym. My team used pretty modern tools like GitLab, Jira, Confluence, and RHEL. Hours were flexible. Dress code was relaxed.

What I wish was different

Not much. It was a great experience overall. If I could change one thing, I’d make the on-site cafeteria cheaper.

Advice

If you run into any issues, don’t hesitate to talk to your intern mentor or manager.

Research Engineer Intern

What I liked

Very interesting work (company-wide), lots of extracirricular events for interns, well-defined intern program, opportunities for mentorship, shadowing, etc., and crazy smart coworkers. Somewhat flexible scheduling, with every other Friday off (although this means longer days the rest of the week). Also, you're working on things that could fly in space.

What I wish was different

I split time between two different sections, and they had never done that before so there was some overloading of my backlog. One of my two "handlers" (not managers, just people I was partnered with) was very difficult to work with and didn't seem to care about my development, but rather what they could get out of me for the summer. Your mileage may vary, as most of the other leaders I spoke with were great.

Advice

LM is a giant organization that does primarily contract work for the government, and with that comes a certain set of expectations. You'll have plenty of computer-based training on things that might not apply to you. Projects take time, finding the right resource can be difficult, and leadership is hit or miss with their support of your development. However, you are working for a company that is integral to space exploration, so you should never feel like your work doesn't matter.

Electrical Engineer Intern

What I liked

This company does everything to make sure you feel welcomed and supported while working there as an intern. We have the option to learn about many different disciplines (EE, ME, Optics, Materials, QA), which helped me decide what I wanted to pursue. Often, they hold different speakers during lunch so that we can learn what their day-to-day jobs are like, how they got to where they are, etc. This helps expose us to different types of jobs and what the path to a career looks like. Each week, there are meetings with your manager to talk through your tasks, your workload, and overall how your experience is going. There are also many opportunities to participate in social events to get closer to the other interns. Over the course of the entire summer, the interns were placed on teams for a program-long project. We learned the process of engineering project proposals, and had to present in front of a "customer". Overall, this company offers many opportunities for learning about what you want to do, how to do it, and generally how to be successful as an engineer/physicist/scientist for a company.

What I wish was different

There are no aspects of the internship that I wish were different. The only things I find myself wishing were different are how I spent my time. I always wish that I had asked more questions, engaged more, learned more on my own, etc. Ultimately, an internship experience is what you make of it. The only thing that I wish was different about the program is the location--but that's a personal desire of mine to experience work outside of WA.

Advice

If you are starting an internship, or have been at one previously, do not hesitate to ask questions! In the end, by asking questions you are helping yourself learn more. Often, I am faced with tasks that I may not know how to complete individually. I can start by searching online to learn on my own, but it is crucial to ask for help from your coworkers, or possibly someone you don't work with directly but who may be a subject matter expert on that topic. Additionally, if you feel overworked or underworked, talk with your manager. They are there to help you, and you do not want to feel like you're getting behind or you're not learning anything.
