What I wish was different
I wish I had more younger engineers around me because most full time employees are much older, experienced engineers so sometimes they forget that there are things I dont understand. I also wish someone had told me not to wait for someone to give me work to do. At Lockheed, they give interns a base task and then it is up to the individual intern to take on more responsibilities and "make their own job" essentially. I figured this out on my own because it was pretty boring at first, but I wanted to see and do more things, so I took my own initiative to get mentors, take trainings, take on additional projects and work with teams across departments. This reflected well on me during my review and since then my manager gave me more work to do because I proved I could handle it. I know many other interns who never took the initiative and complained about how boring their internship was, but honestly, if they had left their cubes long enough to talk to their managers and their team and take on more responsibilities, they would have had as much different experience. Initiative matters a lot at Lockheed Martin. No one is going to just hand an intern who shows no initiative interesting work.
