What I wish was different

I wish they would have had a partnered apartment complex that was reserved solely for summer interns

What I liked

I liked having freedom in what I was working on. They have a good work/life bakance.

Network and get to know people. This is the way to go here.

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

Lockheed Martin emphasized how crucial it is to always be learning and to always be curious. I was able to take ownership of the projects I was working on, and I was able to learn programming languages that I did not know prior to the internship.

What I wish was different

I wish it was a bit more fast paced, but that's just my preference.

Advice

I would tell people to not be afraid to ask for help. A lot of interns come in scared to talk to management or senior engineers, but they shouldn't be. These people are there to help you and they want to see you succeed. You are the future of the company! I would also say, don't be afraid to fail or make mistakes. No one accomplished something ground-breaking without making a few mistakes on the way.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Owego, NY

What I liked

Lockheed Martin was very encouraging and set every intern up for success. They treated me just like any other employee and gave me work that was relevant and important to the company. I really felt like I was making a positive impact on the company.

What I wish was different

The interns did not interact often. I wish there had been more events specifically catered to interns so that we had more opportunities to interact and make friends.

Advice

Take advantage of the experienced employees at your internship. The more you ask the more you will learn. For example, asking about how the business operates or how one's career can develop at the job will help you plan for your future.

Systems Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Littleton, CO

What I liked

Employees were very friendly and helpful, and I learned a lot. I was able to do a variety of useful tasks, and see flight hardware up close.

What I wish was different

There sometimes was not enough work for the interns, but this was due to unexpected issues outside of Lockheed's control.

Advice

Take every chance you get to connect with people and see things (go on tours, etc).

Systems Engineer

May - August 2018 • Moorestown Township, NJ

What I liked

My coworkers in the department were extremely helpful and supportive. There is so much to learn; the system I had worked on was classified, so most of what I did required me to learn all new things. I couldn’t use background knowledge, textbooks, or online resources. But the people were always helpful and understanding because the know how difficult it is at first.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gone into the internship with more coding experience. What you work on depends on what skills you already have. Those with computer science skills got to work on the systems code rather than doing lab work.

Advice

Come into Lockheed with whatever coding experience they suggest you have. It’ll open more doors.

Engineering and technology intern

June - August 2020 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

I loved this internship so so much. Everything about it was amazing. My favorite aspect about this was definitely that amazing and genuinely kind team I was fortunate to get assigned to. My supervisor was so skilled in leadership and taught me so many important things about working at Lockheed. The most memorable thing he asked me was what I was looking to get from this internship, and I told him I wanted real world applications to match my electrical engineering major. He definitely delivered, and the experience was overall outstanding.

What I wish was different

My internship was completely virtual, and I wish I had the opportunity to be there in person and experience their labs. But even through this challenge I took advantage of the opportunity and made strong relationships and memorable experiences.

Advice

I would just say, through any situation or challenge you come across in any internship, take the opportunity and make the most of it. Ask so many questions and learn as much as you can. It is so important that you get that unique experience that will help you stand out. That’s the point if the internship.

Everyone was very kind, helpful, and treated me like a respected employee. I got a lot of hands-on experience to help enhance my college education and better myself as a future engineer.

Autonomous Systems Intern

June - August 2017 • Littleton, CO

What I liked

Awesome projects for machine learning, computer vision, and robotics. Lots of super smart people, and an excellent place to grow. Especially if you are interested in research and development.

What I wish was different

Pretty ideal internship. Supervisors are very flexible and will help adjust the project to meet your interests halfway if it complies with the objective of the facility.

Advice

Know algorithms related to robotics, image processing, computer vision, or machine learning. It doesn't matter where (they will help place you), but you will be working on actual projects here. Things like neural nets, reinforcement learning, etc are there for you to work on if you're interested, but they're also tough areas to pick up in a couple of months.
