Center Intern at LGBTQ* Services

August 2019 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

It's engaging. Being active with other members of the LGBTQ community and doing meaningful work to help spread awareness and educate means so much to me as an employee and a person.

What I wish was different

This is a job that requires a lot of time and dedication, and while it's meaningful work, it takes up a great chunk of time I wish I had to myself.

Advice

Learn to manage your time with efficiency. The work is inherently abusive, but the people here do genuinely care for you and want you to focus on your academics. Talk to your supervisors if you need help, and they'll be there.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

April 2019 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

Had a chance to learn valuable research skills from the psychology department

What I wish was different

It was a good experience, I can’t think of anything to chance

Advice

This lab required the research assistants to go out into the community and approach people about the study, so it may be difficult for those who are shy or do not have a strong network to rely on.

Laboratory Researcher

November 2018 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

I liked how flexible my schedule was over the summer. I was taking three summer classes and the members of the lab were extremely understanding of my other obligations. Being a part of a team and knowing you have the support of your colleagues is an amazing feeling. Anytime I was not doing school work, I came into lab to continue whatever work I was doing prior.

What I wish was different

I wish I was not taking summer classes along with this position. I was working in the lab at nonconventional hours. I spent most of the beginning of the day busy with classes and would spend the rest of the day doing research. My hours were not ideal, but I was able to dedicate enough time and more to be able to do my work. If I was less stressed out, I would've enjoyed myself more than I already did.

Advice

Whatever you decide you want to do, make sure you schedule your time well to get everything you need to do done. Be organized and think ahead of time what you want your next few months to look like. Preparing in advance will only help whatever experience you wish to pursue!

Summer Research Assistant

May - September 2018 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

Stony Brook University had a great facility that catered to research. As it is a larger school, it has more resources and imaging devices that can be utilized for furthering research. Since I was an undergrad and one of the younger members of lab, I was able to learn a lot from the grad students and post-docs working there. Everyone in the lab was engaging and welcoming.

Computer consultant

June 2015 - May 2017 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

No micromanagement. They give you a lot of responsibility managing thousands of dollars of equipment which i liked. I loved it but only left because i graduated.

What I wish was different

The pay couldve been better for people working late shifts i.e. until 2:30am

Advice

Always remember to submit your next semesters preferences early i.e. right when your manager posts the preferences thread on blackboard. Also always remember to take inventory; dont be lazy about it because if one day something goes missing that you dont catch, its coming out of your paycheck.

Resident Assistant

June - August 2019 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

I loved interacting with my residents and helping them adjust into a university setting. I worked with pre-freshmen so it was quite an interesting experience.

What I wish was different

I wished a lot of things were different including what an RA can and cannot do, but it was all out of my control.

Advice

The role of an RA is very important. You may not feel valued at the time by some residents, but after you have made a positive impact on their lives, they never forget you.
