AIM Teach Assistant

July - August 2019 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

I loved being able to help students improve their writing and critical thinking skills. I was also given the opportunity to conduct a mini lecture with the students I was a TA for.

What I wish was different

There isn't much I would want to change.

Advice

I would advise to always remember that these students are incoming freshmen so it is best to be patient with them. You are there to help them acclimate to college so you should always be ready to listen and give them advice.

Laboratory Researcher

November 2018 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

I liked how flexible my schedule was over the summer. I was taking three summer classes and the members of the lab were extremely understanding of my other obligations. Being a part of a team and knowing you have the support of your colleagues is an amazing feeling. Anytime I was not doing school work, I came into lab to continue whatever work I was doing prior.

What I wish was different

I wish I was not taking summer classes along with this position. I was working in the lab at nonconventional hours. I spent most of the beginning of the day busy with classes and would spend the rest of the day doing research. My hours were not ideal, but I was able to dedicate enough time and more to be able to do my work. If I was less stressed out, I would've enjoyed myself more than I already did.

Advice

Whatever you decide you want to do, make sure you schedule your time well to get everything you need to do done. Be organized and think ahead of time what you want your next few months to look like. Preparing in advance will only help whatever experience you wish to pursue!

Lead Reservations Assistant

August 2018 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

I really like how supportive the office is and the experience it has with departments and external organizations. It was great to learn about google spreadsheets, VISIO diagrams, and 25Live Pro. I feel prepared to learn different types of programs that I am unfamiliar with. You get a lot of experience with public relations and communications.

What I wish was different

In some ways I wish I was able to apply my studies to my job; I didn't really feel like my interests were applicable at times. There were times I wished the office environment was different as well.

Advice

This is great for students looking to understand what it is like to work in an office, to work in higher education, and to work in event planning. If you are looking for business or financial careers, this could be great too. However, if you are STEM, this opportunity may not apply to your studies.

Resident Assistant

June - August 2019 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

I loved interacting with my residents and helping them adjust into a university setting. I worked with pre-freshmen so it was quite an interesting experience.

What I wish was different

I wished a lot of things were different including what an RA can and cannot do, but it was all out of my control.

Advice

The role of an RA is very important. You may not feel valued at the time by some residents, but after you have made a positive impact on their lives, they never forget you.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

What I liked

Had a chance to learn valuable research skills from the psychology department

What I wish was different

Biomedical Engineering Design

September 2018 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed the internship because it provided me a new perspective on biomedical engineering. It helped me decide what I wanted to do with my future specifically how to combine my interest in medicine and my goal to become a physician with my interest in engineering in design.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been a little more organized with a more defined schedule that the interns knew about as well.

Advice

Be creative and open to learning new ways of thinking otherwise it is hard to take something away from the experience.
