What I liked

I enjoyed the level of independence my PI gave me in the genetics lab I worked in. He knew I was coming in with a fair amount of knowledge and experience and was kind enough and trustful enough to set me up conducting part of an experiment he needed to write a paper on gene attenuation caused by the genetic sequence itself.

What I wish was different

I wish the lab had more people my age and experience level. I feel like I could have made more connections had there been more people to socialize with. I also wish that I had

I would say that even if an internship doesn't live up to your expectations you can still get really valuable information out of it because it can point you towards what you really want to do and what really excites you.

Working for SEA is one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I really love my job. I'm very fortunate to have such amazing and hilarious colleagues who always make an event become successful. I am also really glad to have such good reviews from the students about our events.

Less hot.

Organization is key! That means you have to set goals and due dates for everything you do, whether it be creating a flyer, outreaching to clubs, or purchasing materials.

I enjoyed developing my customer service, time management, and communication skills. I also enjoyed being able to stay on-campus and learn more about how campus residences operates.

I wish my team and I had a conference schedule set earlier to better prepare us for larger or longer conferences.

Try to communicate as carefully and as flexibly as you can with colleagues and supervisors to ensure everyone contributes a fair share to the overall workload.

What I liked

I love this job! I got to explore Long Island by going to different music festivals and events in order to market the Staller Center.

What I wish was different

I am really satisfied with the job so far. You get to work in a team, the communication between supervisors and team was good. The hours were fairly flexible and the work is really fun!

Advice

Don’t be afraid to apply even if you have no marketing experience! It does help to have good communication skills!

More social activities (I didn’t even know who else was in this program during the time) as it would’ve been nice to network and learn about other students’ projects.

I love helping students get acclimated to the university and working together in a team to give people the best experience possible. Also making friends is so easy and it’s just incredible to get those connections.

I was a returner this summer, so I wish there was more for me to learn.

Be yourself, because that improves your customer service and gives people the best experience that can. When you’re having a genuine good fun time, that lets others have a genuine fun time.

I liked the atmosphere and the location of the job. The pace out in Southampton is much slower than the pace in New York City.

I wish there was more to do around the area. Most days I spend in my room or at the beach.

Conference Assistant

What I liked

It allowed me to network while on campus and create new relationships with Resident Hall Directors, Resident Assistants and other Stony Brook faculty and students

What I wish was different

The scheduling was very hectic and seemed good on paper but hard to implement. More communication from higher up would have been beneficiary as it would've allowed feedback to be processed quicker

Make as many new relationships as you can! You never know who you will meet
