Social Media Intern for the Leadership Office

September 2016 - May 2017 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

All my coworkers were extremely welcoming and helped me settle into my role quickly. I was able to work closely with the Campus Involvement Project, which is a student-run organization that is dedicated to helping students find clubs and orgs they are interested in, and raises awareness of all the amazing opportunities on our campus. Getting to work with student leaders was not only inspiring, it led to me joining the Campus Involvement Project myself. I now have an internship in the Office of the Dean of Students, under the same adviser I had worked under in the Leadership Office.

What I wish was different

I was given a lot of independence while working this internship, which was nice sometimes, but I do wish I'd been given a bit more of a structured schedule, because sometimes I found myself with too much free time during office hours.

Advice

Don't be afraid to take the lead and form your own projects! Show you're passionate about what you're doing and willing to take initiative.

Stony Brook University had a great facility that catered to research. As it is a larger school, it has more resources and imaging devices that can be utilized for furthering research. Since I was an undergrad and one of the younger members of lab, I was able to learn a lot from the grad students and post-docs working there. Everyone in the lab was engaging and welcoming.
