Retail Lending Services Operations Intern

May - August 2023 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be scared to ask questions or try something new. Joining the corporate world or just starting any new position in general can be really scary at first, but it is extremely beneficial to ask questions and make connections with people in your team. The only way you will learn new things is by stepping out of your comfort zone, asking to try new things, and/ or take the lead on projects.

Product Innovation Intern

May - August 2023 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

- Being creative, analytical, and taking ownership of projects in a fast-paced business environment - Working with a team to create a new product for the bank - Experiencing a new city

What I wish was different

- Hybrid work rather than in-office daily

Advice

- Keep an open mind to all new experiences such as being in a new city - Be yourself when talking to new people, even executive leaders, be professional but not overly professional to the extent that you're difficult to connect with - Make friends with fellow interns outside of your line of business

Technology Intern

May - July 2022 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

- Great People (Interns and full-timers) - People-oriented culture: They love to keep their staff happy

What I wish was different

I wish I were treated more like a full-time engineer and work in the same style that full-time engineers work instead of working on a side project.

Advice

" I would say be diligent in everything you do - You may not always get your top choice internship but making a good name for yourself is better than silver or gold! " This wasn't my top choice internship but I had an invaluable experience which has helped open several doors for me

June - August 2021 • Miamisburg, OH

What I liked

Great learning environment. Staff was helpful and friendly, inviting questions.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more younger employees. The average age seemed to be mid 40s.

Advice

There are great opportunities to move up in PNC if you are willing to look for them. While data entry is a monotonous job, it is a stepping stone to data analysis and a good experience to have.

Banker

February 2019 - September 2020 • New Brunswick, NJ

What I liked

I enjoyed the challenges that came along with finding which customers best benefited from our financial products.

What I wish was different

I wish the job were at night so I could focus on school throughout the day.

Advice

A piece of advice I would share is to take a “No” as a “Try Harder Next Time.” When it comes to sales, getting rejected can be hard, but it’s important to not take it personal and continue to work harder.

Model Risk Management

May - August 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

Associate level employees are generally nice. It was possible to obtain interesting/relevant projects.

What I wish was different

Out of my cohort of 19 interns, at least 5 had family members in upper level management. Those individuals all received higher level projects and return offers. Initially provided work was not based on relevant expertise or background, I.e. marketing majors receiving substantive financial/underwriting related projects ahead of people with programming and quant experience. Interns receive scored manger reviews at midpoint and end of internship. These had little correlation with return offers and even rotational placement. It seems that hiring decisions had little to do with the input of your day to day manager as an intern.

Advice

While it is very possible to work for PNC Risk Management and have a good experience, I would avoid it if you have alternative options at companies (or even different PNC department) that provide clear expectations for advancement, rather than function as work programs for executives' children.
