Advice

Be open to new experiences, because you’ll never know who you’ll meet.

What I wish was different

Advice

If it’s something you love to do, just do it. You’re only young once and experiencing something when you’re old is not the same as when you experience the same thing while you’re young.

Waitress

June 2017 • Waddington, NY

What I liked

I loved earning the experience of being a waitress and all of the challenges that came with it. Getting to know the regulars, learning how to comfortably talk with strangers, and becoming more confident in my abilities were all things that made my waitressing experience worth it!

What I wish was different

My father was my boss. I wish I would’ve worked for a complete stranger- just to experience what a job would be like without a boss that I know personally.

Advice

My word of advice would be to never give up! Waitressing is not the easiest job in the world. You will be faced with challenges that make you want to curl up in a ball and call it quits- dont! Always keep a smile on your face and remain patient. The customer is always right..even when they’re not!

Nannying

June - August 2019 • Maumee, OH

What I liked

I really love kids, so this was a great experience for me! I have always spent my summers babysitting for different families. The pay is great and I really do enjoy the work that I do because I love the kids that I watch! It was also nice because I typically babysat from 7:30 am-4:00 pm, so I never had to work evenings!

What I wish was different

I worked part-time for two different families. So I was at the one house from 7:30 am - 11:30 am and then I was at the other house from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm. It was sometimes difficult leaving and getting to the other house on time! Overall though, it was still nice having a little gap in the day because it can get tough being with kids as a full-time job! If I were to get a similar opportunity again, I would probably take it!

Advice

If you enjoy being with kids, nannying is a great summer job! You get to just take care of them and plan fun things to do together. The only downside is that there are a lot of other things that would look better to put on your resume for job experience that are more formal ways of childcare (ex: daycare).
