What I wish was different

Advice

When you go to get a job, you have to make sure that the company is respectable. You also need to know that finding a new job is not easy. You can send out over 100 applications, and not hear back from any of the companies. Finding a job is a job in itself. Seriously research a company before you apply, and pretend to be confident in an interview even if you're not.

Nurse Assistant

July - August 2019 • Lagos, Lagos

What I liked

In my six weeks in Nigeria, I got to partner with Genesis House, a rehabilitation center in Lagos, Nigeria for girls and young women who are sexual abuse and sex trafficking survivors. There, I shadowed a psychiatric nurse who is responsible for monitoring the physical and mental health of each of the girls. I love everything about Genesis House, especially getting to hear all of the girls’ stories and learning more about sex trafficking. It was a learning experience that no other experience can compare to.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten to do more hands on, but I also understand that I won’t be able to until I’m an actual registered nurse.

Advice

It’s in Nigeria, so it’s a pretty far distance, but it’s definitely worth looking into! There are also many ways to donate.

Camp Counselor

June 2012 - July 2019 • Lafayette, LA

What I liked

The children are funny people. Seeing a change of shy students when the summer starts, to being bright and bold when the camp ends.

What I wish was different

I wish I didn't work as much. I work work here from 8-5:30, then work nights from 6-11pm and weekends. I didn't give my all to the kids because some days I would come exhausted.

Advice

If you do not like kids, do not work at a camp. Kids are hilarious, but the need to know/see some one cares for them. Not someone who is just there for a check.
