Software engineer intern

May - August 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

The opportunity to meet several professional leaders that are shaping the future of technology

What I wish was different

My team’s organization went through multiple reorganizations during my internship. I didn’t have that feeling of team stability

Advice

Sometimes can be scary to work for such a huge company. But if you made it, challenge yourself even more. A company like this can be seen as the roof of your career, but it is only a new floor to start growing

Events and Programming Intern

June - September 2018 • Fargo, ND

What I liked

The Student Experience Program provided an amazing way to network with both career professionals in my major, but also with students from the area studying and sharing similar goals.

What I wish was different

I had a difficult time going through HR after I was hired - it took almost a month to actually begin my job that was supposed to begin immediately after the school year ended.

Advice

Network with the other interns! Not only have I made lifelong friends, but I have also been able to connect through them in order to become closer with my community.

Treasury and Capital Markets Summer Analyst

May - August 2017 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

The company culture. It's absolutely unmatched. Subsidised food was also amazing ($7 Filet that can be cut with a fork and 2 sides). Intern activities were unbelievable (Private Chainsmokers concert, free xbox one, bubble soccer, river tubing, lunch with CFO, etc..). Free rental car and hotel for the whole summer.

What I wish was different

Because trading markets started on east coast time, the day started really early.

Advice

Make a strong first impression.

June - September 2017 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

Tons of intern events to keep you busy; Seattle is an awesome city and there's tons of great hiking areas between 1 and 5 hours away; Intern Signature Event is crazy fun; because there were so many inters I always felt like there were more people to meet and more fun experiences to share as well as a close support network if ever needed.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more say in which project i got. I did not particularly enjoy my project, and I told my manager after a few weeks and he was happy to give me something else to work on.

Advice

Network within the company! If you want to return as an intern or full time, you should tell your recruiter by week 6 which team you've been talking with.

Explorer Intern

May - August 2017 • Mountain View, CA

What I liked

I was able to gain hands on experience and learn about the industrial side of computer science that I otherwise wouldn't have gained from school.

What I wish was different

I can't think of anything that I would change.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Rather than wasting time being stuck it is better to ask for help (after some reasonable amount of time trying by yourself of course).

Software Engineering Intern

May - July 2017 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

Microsoft is a giant company with a wealth of extremely interesting opportunities. This size and the well-established nature of their intern program make it an excellent place to experiment, learn, and grow over the course of a summer.

What I wish was different

I wish their had been more opportunity to learn about the company strategic plans as a whole and network with more executive people. Aside from frequent Q/A sessions, conversations are pretty much limited to your team members.

Advice

Communicate with those around you, even if you're shy. The only interns I saw not receive return offers were the ones who tried to do everything themselves and were resistant to asking for help.
