Microsoft

Explore Intern

May - August 2019 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

Lots of resources, events and perks. Had several mentors to guide me through the process and help me become a more confident software engineer.

What I wish was different

Microsoft needs to put in more effort to hire women and minorities on certain teams. Though overall diversity has improved at Microsoft over the years, certain teams are extremely binary and lacking any sort of diversity.

Advice

Don't be afraid to be honest about how you're feeling, feedback is valuable to those higher up than you and will help others have a better experience in the future.

Cloud Supply Chain Intern

June - August 2019 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

There are internship activities at a Microsoft-wide level and also within the organization, so for me it was in Cloud Sourcing and Supply Chain. This means that there are unlimited opportunities to network with leaders, hear from inspiring speakers, and create relationships with fellow interns. Within my organization, it was really evident that the entire team, from the leaders to the employees, values the work of the interns. They gave us meaningful projects that have tangible business impacts, showed interest in understanding our projects, and provided help and suggestions in the development of our work. I really appreciated this and it left me with a great understanding of the company culture and values.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

It can be overwhelming to realize that you need to understand the processes and ins and outs of the business all while completing a project that not only depends on the understanding of that information but also adds value to the business all within 12 weeks. Know that full-time employees aren't expected to grasp a full understanding of the entire business until at least 9 months into the job - so do the best you can and don't worry if you don't know everything!

Advice

Just ask questions when you're confused because no one expects you to know everything. And get to know everyone on your team because they're so interesting!

Software Engineering Intern

What I liked

A ton of social events for interns to get to know each other. This was very beneficial for those who would be returning for full time and were not from the area. Due to this, these individuals have plenty of friends to come back to following their last year of classes.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

I loved that they gave us projects that were relevant to what the team needed. Higher level managements and contributors were very accessible and friendly. Lots of monetary benefits, obviously. My team was amazing and super helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more interns specifically on my team, since it would have been more likely that I would have worked with someone in my age group.

Advice

Make sure to ask for help as often as you need it, it's the only way you'll succeed here.

What I liked

Seattle is a gorgeous city — beaches, mountains, forests, lakes, etc. — and I got to explore so much of it! I also learned so much doing software engineering and product management at Microsoft, and really valued the ability to explore both areas as a way to narrow down what I want to do in the future.
