Co-Op/Apprentice

June 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

The openness of the people around me.

What I wish was different

That Covid hadn't been a thing so that I could have worked in the office instead of virtually.

Advice

Get used to asking questions. Not knowing the answer is fine, but not pursuing that knowledge isn't. Also, make sure to take advantage of your role as an intern and reach out to various employees around the company whose job interests you. Emailing them out of the blue is perfectly fine as long as you explain how you'll benefit from their time.

Biomedical Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I liked how helpful everyone at Medtronic was. Everyone was willing to provide whatever resources necessary to ensure that I succeed, answer any questions I had as an intern, and they treated me like an employee; no one was ever condescending or anything regarding my youth & inexperience as I began the internship

What I wish was different

I wish it was in person (it was switched to virtual) so that I could have had a more personal & hands on experience

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, don’t let you being an intern discourage you, NETWORK. TALK TO EVERYONE YOU CAN.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Plymouth, MN

What I liked

Everyone was really nice and supportive. It seemed like everyone was invested in you acheiving goals. I definitely felt like I enjoyed it.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a project sooner. It took a while, but perhaps that's because of the pandemic just started, and my original project was scrapped. I also had difficulty picking something to do right away, mostly because the projects weren't really software development related. The team at Medtronic was great at coming up with ideas for the project! Great group of people.

Advice

Ask questions. Bother the heck out of your team. They know you're learning and it's expected to be bothersome.

associate finance intern

June - August 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

Everyone was very nice and open to meeting with me, and I found that they were also committed to helping me progress in my career.

What I wish was different

None of my activities were in-person, and I would've greatly appreciated if they would've made an effort to accommodate an in-person activity. Also, some work just wasn't the right fit for my interests.

Advice

Network with as many people as you can! I was able to shift into a different area and meet tons of new people.

Supplier Quality Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Memphis, TN

What I liked

It was very collaborative. No one person could complete something without input from another team member.

What I wish was different

More intern inclusive and intern focus-driven. I wish the interns would’ve gotten a chance to experience most if not all aspects of what they were absolutely interested in in a more hands-on way.

Advice

Always be prepared. Always give your best. Always be aware that everyone is watching.

R&D Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • North Haven, CT

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to spearhead my own internship project, and setting and achieving goals agreed on by my manager and I. I was also able to shadow other employees and learn about roles outside of my immediate team, and collaborated with other team members on team projects. My internship manager and my peer mentor’s amazing mentorship was critical in my success and guiding me towards achieving and exceeding my project goals.

What I wish was different

It was a great internship experience, no complaints!

Advice

Network as much as you can and conduct informational interviews with anyone or department that you are interested in. Make sure you give 100% to your internship experience. It’s what you make of it, and remember there is no guarantee that you will get a job offer because of timing or openings available, so get the most out of the internship experience as you can to propel you forward and allow you to achieve and exceed your goals!

Engineering Summer Intern

June - August 2020 • Woburn, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed being assigned to projects that allowed me to contribute real, meaningful work to the team.

What I wish was different

I was on a pre-product development team, so I didn't have many other people working on my project since it was so new, so being in a virtual environment made it a little isolating.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! People won't think you're stupid.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Fridley, MN

What I liked

I enjoyed the projects I got to work on- I was able to make improvements to our manufacturing process, specifically in how scrapped product gets captured. Medtronic also assigns each intern a mentor, who is very helpful to ask questions to and bounce ideas off of. My team was welcoming and made sure I knew that my work was valued.

What I wish was different

Due to the pandemic, the internship was entirely virtual. I would've liked to get into the facility and have more of a hands-on aspect to my projects, particularly being in a manufacturing position, but that just wasn't possible with the current situation.

Advice

My advice would be to make your future career goals known to your manager and other people around the office. I was able to stay on part-time this fall, simply because I mentioned to a few people that I was interested in doing this. You never know who will open doors for you if they just know what your objectives are.

Biomedical Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Northridge, CA

What I liked

Medtronic has a great company culture and the work I did over the summer was both impactful to the team and myself. I felt like they really invested in me and my learning; in return, I created a software tool that greatly improved their efficiency by automating a common process.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have in been on-site and in person; due to COVID-19, however, that was out of their control - despite the circumstance, the experience was amazing!

Advice

A summer internship at a company you know you may want to work at is really important - you learn a lot about industry, your own strengths and weaknesses, and understand if you would like more experiences like that.
