What I liked

Ability to work on a project individually while still being able to ask questions of manager or experienced people. There was always work that needed to be done and you were trusted to complete the work when you said you can.

What I wish was different

Shorter commute between apartment and work.

What I liked

The work culture at Medtronic exceeded my expectations. As an intern, you are given very important projects and are exposed to opportunities where you can make a long lasting impact with your time at the company. The managers and everyone at the site were extremely friendly and helpful and resources were easily accessible.

What I wish was different

I wish that the Human Resources department would have been more helpful with granting me my desired return offer. The process for return offers felt like it was to my own personal disadvantage and I would've liked to have my location preferences heard.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions or to be curious about another department. Make the most out of your internship and find out the most you can about your company and about the business unit you are working in. Network! Make as many connections as you can.

Supply Chain Intern

What I liked

I loved getting hands on experience with supply chain including time in many different disciplines within supply chain. The team at Medtronic was very welcoming and always were available to help me if I was lost.

What I wish was different

Having choices between which of the available apartments would have been nice but it did not deter from my experience.

Come in ready to learn and don't be afraid to ask for help.

What I liked

I loved gaining clinical experience, working with physicians, surgeons, and patients alike. The internship was fast-paced with unique circumstances coming up every day. I was given a greater insight to the sales side of engineering while also working as a health care professional.

Design Quality Engineering Intern

What I liked

I really appreciated the cross-functional involvement of the role and the chance to work with teams of different engineers to deliver quality assurance and regulatory documents. I also appreciated how interns were valued and work completed was used to drive company progress. Work life balance was awesome and the intern program was wonderfully run for the most part. Also the benefits with regard to housing and relocation assistance were amazing.

What I wish was different

I wish the way that onboarding and key quality documents were given to us was more engaging. I also wish there was transport to and from work and that the housing complex was closer to work.

Advice

Get ready to learn and never forget to ask, why does what I'm doing matter?

What I liked

I liked that the entire culture of the company is very mission-driven ("...to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life...") and that every employee with whom I interacted was extremely helpful. I also like that I had a real engineering project of my own. I was not simply given a support role in another project, or made to do typical "intern tasks." Rather, I was given a project over which I had full ownership, was technically challenging, and which made a definite impact on the company.

What I wish was different

I wish that the onboarding process had been smoother. There were many technical onboarding related issues that prevented me from making progress on my project for a very long time.

Advice

Networking is everything: networking will get you into an internship in the first place, and networking will get you more places once you have that internship. Networking doesn't just have to be a dry business practice, either: networking actually becomes very natural if you choose to take a genuine interest in the work that other people are doing.

Great work environment, and a very nice intern program. Subsidized housing was amazing, and managers always had a clear plan of what was to be done. Great experience!

Transportation is more troublesome for the Minneapolis areas - might need a car

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to work on the verification and validation of a product with a hands on role in the testing and protocol development. I also liked the numerous opportunities for cross-functional communication and the integration of various skills within the team.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to rotate through various roles a bit more to get a more well rounded experience and more exposure to different products.

Work hard and take advantage of all the wonderful resources available to you at the company.

I loved the hands on experience and the amount of responsibility they gave their interns. I really enjoyed learning on the job as well and learning new programs.

What I wish was different

I wish that some of the relocation services were more considerate of people coming in from out of state.

Systems Engineer

What I liked

The mentorship program was fantastic - monthly check-ins with my manager helped me to focus on career development as well as my technical development. I also had a "peer-mentor" who was closer in age to me and was and still is able to provide career development advice. I was able to work on a variety of projects and learn a lot about the particular system we were developing. Even though I was not in a location with many interns they still hosted several intern events for those of us in the region.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more interns at my location, or that I was based out of a larger regional office/headquarters.

Advice

Use an internship opportunity to meet and connect with as many people as possible, and to learn about different career paths that may interest you. Don't be afraid to ask to work on parts of the ongoing projects that interest you most, even if it is not necessarily what you were hired to do.

System Validation Engineering Intern

What I liked

I liked that I was finally able to apply my degree to real-world problems. I was treated as any other team member, and I was able to experience what my future will be like.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more time to work on my project. The summer was halfway over before I fully understood the scope of my project, which limited the amount of progress I was able to make on it.

Advice

Go into your internship with an open mind. Try and do the best you can, but don’t stress yourself out. Your manager knows you are still in college, with very little experience, and willl probably make mistakes. As long as you learn from them, you can save yourself from making those same mistakes when you are actually in your real job.

Software Test Intern

What I liked

The team and especially my manager were amazing, very supportive of me and my career goals. The intern cohort was also super cool and friendly. There were a lot of opportunities to grow and learn more about the company.

What I wish was different

I initially was given 3 days right before Thanksgiving to accept the offer, but thankfully they pushed it back a weekend (though still not a lot) to decide.

Ask questions! Be confident in your abilities.

What I liked

I loved the intern community at the company, and the atmosphere of the location I worked at. It was great experience to be able to work on my own personal project throughout the summer as well.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've had a little less guidance on my project from my manager, so that I could've developed more of my own solutions.

Advice

Talk to as many people as possible to try to learn more about the company and the opportunities that are available. Also, people will likely have advice relating to your project as well, so don't be afraid to ask people who are more experienced than you.

What I liked

Medtronic has been great. They have helped me develop my knowledge of the Medical Devices Industry as well as Test Engineering. I have been challenged and given responsibility without being overloaded with work that I can't complete.

What I wish was different

I wish I had asked to learn about specific areas that I wanted to develop. For example they had SolidWorks projects that needed to be done and I knew that it was an area I wanted to improve, but I never asked to be on that project.

Advice

Don't be afraid to voice your opinion. Generally the internship will want to give you work that you want to do, but they wont know what you want to do unless you tell them explicitly.
