I wish I had been in the field a bit more.

Advice

I would suggest that they stay on top of paperwork and get a good night's sleep every night. Checking email is super important.

Be proactive, take advantage of diverse opportunities, and immerse yourself in all of the experiences your employer provides right away! I got the most out of my time at Medtronic when I explored the manufacturing lines, asked lots of questions, and reached out to request informational interviews from employees of all backgrounds.

I loved working for Medtronic. The department I worked in really encouraged lifelong learning, which I really value. The company culture was very inclusive and welcoming.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to work there for the entire summer so that I could learn more. I also wish I had more to do.

Constantly be asking for more work. If you don't, you won't get any.

What I liked

I have been give a lot of responsibility to handle test methods from start to finish. I've designed fixturing, written protocols, analyzed testing data, and written reports. It is a very friendly environment, with the other co-ops and the full time employees. Everyone is willing to help me learn. It is a very relaxed and positive environment.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't struggle trying to figure something out when it isn't a matter of looking something up. Use the experience expertise around you.

What I liked

I love the mission of the company! It is incredible. We worked on surgical drills and new technology all summer, and I was able to shadow a neurosurgeon in our cadaver lab on site.

What I wish was different

I wish I had weekly report outs about what I was working on with my boss even though we talked every day.

Write bullet points of everything you do during the summer - there is so much going on!

I liked working independently on my project and learning how to troubleshoot my own experiment. I also enjoyed improving my communication skills by presenting my work several times throughout the summer. I liked the networking opportunities as well.

I wish I had shadowed more people.

What I liked

Very fast paced environment. I was able to play a role in many different documents supporting the manufacturing line.

What I wish was different

Since it was so fast paced it was at times difficult to get other people to help out on things I had never done before, but that also helped me learn what I was doing a lot more effectively.

Advice

Be ready to be thrown right in and don't be afraid to ask questions, but make sure you've tried everything you could to get an answer before going to another engineer.

Biomedical Engineering Intern

What I liked

I worked with a very welcoming group, and got to work on novel projects. My project was work that would potentially lead into a clinical trial, so it was very exciting to work on something that was really going to make a difference for the patients and the company. I also gained knowledge on the process to get a device to market.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more organized events to help start the networking process. Most of the networking I did throughout the summer was set up by myself by simply sending out emails.

Advice

I would suggest to be confident in the knowledge and skills that you have, but also be open to learning new things. I was given a lot of freedom in the work I did, but it was expected that the work was done right. No one came by to re-check things that I did. I made sure to support my work with evidence or a thought out process, and sought out help when I wasn't confident in a task.

Clinical Research Intern

What I liked

I honestly loved everything about it. I was literally in my dream job department and got to blend the two spheres I'm passionate about, biomedical engineering and public health, and feel important. I also had so much room to network and learn a large amount of information about the company and its business units.

What I wish was different

I honestly wish I had more time with the company. It would have been nice to get another month to do more.

Advice

It was definitely unique and I advise everyone to explore realms outside R&D.

What I liked

I loved the wide array of tasks I got to do and help on. The highlight of the internship was being given two projects that I independently worked on and was able to deliver the final results. The level of autonomy was amazing as I felt like an important member of the team.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten to experience other business groups within Medtronic to understand the company as a whole.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can think of because your team is there to help you learn, understand and grow as an engineer. Also. always be eager to help out on random projects because you never what you may learn and what skill you get.

Projects given to interns were actually important and the people that I worked with were amazing.

What I wish was different

Wish there was a little bit more feedback on how I was doing. I always felt as though I was contributing and doing good work but would have loved some more feedback on things I needed to work on.

Advice

Piece of advice would be to try and network more. I feel as though I could've gotten more networking in throughout the summer and talked to more people.
