Advising Assistant

What I liked

I love getting to help incoming students create their schedules and get a grasp of what attending CSU will be like. It is also such a pleasure getting to coordinate with the academic advisors of the psychology department. I get to learn so much more about the behind-the-scenes of advising and what it truly takes to keep all psychology students afloat. I also loved being able to present in front of large groups and work on various projects.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more hours working with this job. However, I am just so grateful that I had this opportunity and that I am still able to work with the department this semester.

Advice

I would share to others that being open to new opportunities is one of the biggest things. I had no idea what this job entailed, and as it is a new role created by the department, we were all brainstorming on ways to optimize my role. Being open to experiences and rolling with the flow really helped and allowed me to take on various projects and tasks.

Working with a team of veterinarians, residents, interms, and students. Every day is different and I am consistently learning new things. Working in a teaching hospital environment is an amazing way to gain experience.

Come ready with your thinking cap on. This a job where you are learning on the spot, and can gain more or less experiences by how willing you are to participate.

What I liked

I liked the strong communication with my boss. She let me work on projects that would enrich my experience and give me a stronger portfolio. I was also allowed to take a little time off. I was able to take charge and lead projects on my own because she trusted my knowledge.

I wish I would've had more time to work on more projects.

Be confident in your knowledge and your skills. Don't be afraid to take chances and push your boundaries because you'll most likely end up with positive results and more confidence.

Graduate Teaching Assistant

What I liked

I liked the flexibility of the position. I had to get 20 hours in per week, but that could occur at night and weekends to grade papers. I also loved the faculty in the Hospitality Program- they made the job easy and enjoyable. It was also fun to work with undergraduate students and help them grow and develop their knowledge base and skillset.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't have changed anything.

Advice

I would recommend that GTAs get their own work done on time. Procrastinating can cause stress when personal work deadlines collide with student teaching deadlines.

I ended up getting the job through one of the professor's who taught a class in my program. I think if you are a good student who tries hard and does good work, it will be noticed. Don't be afraid to ask for help from professor's at their office hours.
