I wish the schedule was less variable and more concrete. Some weeks I barely worked and did not get the amount of hours I intended to have.

it definitely allowed to to envision what my career would look like this this career path. Unfortunately it did not work with me and provided me with the perspective and motivation to switch majors and career paths

I liked the ability to work in an actual graduate lab for a summer to learn the dynamics and expectations required of me prior to officially entering graduate school.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more proactive and productive in my first two months. I was able to settle in and really be independent in my last month.

Go in with an open mind but don’t be afraid to step outside of your shell - no matter how terrifying it may be.

Working for such a large employer has its difficulties. It can be difficult to find value in your position when there are so many other positions that are similar in nature.

What I liked

I was able to learn about research and field techniques collecting insects and flower specimens. I also was able to learn about to categorize the samples and conduct transect plant surveys. I enjoyed working with the staff involved and the flexibility of the hours.

What I wish was different

I had very long drives to make. However, that is the nature of the job however I wish I would have had safer places to park my car as we went out into the field.

Advice

Make sure your schedule for the summer is highly flexible. Hours are heavily dependent on weather so they are not set in stone usually.

In depth understanding of next generation sequencing with hands on involvement. I love that it is on campus and easily accessible as well as well-paired to my core curriculum.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions and read a lot of literature to fully understand new concepts to then ask questions about. This shows interest and involvement and will really help you gain a full understanding. Senior research is the best bridge to further educational goals or career goals. Ask questions, build more connections, and get involved,
