Walmart Stores and Clubs

Customer Service Representative

July 2020 • Taylor, PA

What I liked

As I was new to this country, I wanted to learn new things that happens in the life of a common American and so I decided to take a job at Walmart so as to also manage my time with my University work. The customers at Walmart were mostly polite and kind and since I was being sweet to many of my customers, my manager always had my back. The overall experience in this industry was really great as I also got an opportunity to work with the Anti-Money Laundering Business.

What I wish was different

I wish if the breaks were given to us in the right time. And also I wish if there were seats for us to sit in and work as sometimes even employee's satisfaction can increase an employer's productivity.

Advice

Try to smile always and make the customers pleased by answering their queries and even if you don't know the answer try helping them in a small sort of way which will be helpful to them in some kind of way.

Stocker

July - November 2020 • Fort Collins, CO

What I liked

I liked my coworkers a lot and the work itself was not too difficult.

What I wish was different

The customer interactions (it's Walmart, though, so I should have prepared myself more for that), and management. Management at my store was so unbelievably poor that it makes perfect sense as to why their turnover rate is so high.

Advice

If you're thinking about applying to Walmart, peruse the Walmart subreddit and reconsider your options.

Cashier

May 2020 • New Lenox, IL

What I liked

The environment was so nice! All of my coworkers were really friendly and helpful as far as training me and giving me tips as I started to learn new things. I had wonderful leaders around me and the customers were really kind as well, everyone helped made it a really nice job to have,

What I wish was different

Sometimes things could get a little chaotic and feel a little less organized than they could be, but that could happen at any job really. You just have to push through.

Advice

Have a good attitude about it! Even if it feels difficult, going in with a negative mindset will only make a long day longer.

June - August 2021 • Bentonville, AR

What I liked

I was able to gain hands-on experience with the whole UX product life cycle through two projects. Since I was given a lead designer role, I juggled a lot of responsibilities and developed my leadership skills throughout these three months.

What I wish was different

I wish I was placed in a team with more designers so that I could learn from these professionals in a closer setting.

Advice

I would say to apply to as many jobs as possible, it wasn't easy landing an internship but through months of applications and interviews, I was fortunate enough to work here for the summer.

Cafe Associate

August 2019 - March 2020 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

When I was an associate at Sam's Club, I liked how they gave you a free Plus Membership to the club. It helped out because I was able to use the membership to buy groceries, electronics, and other essentials while in college. In addition, the associates that I worked with were very nice and conversational.

What I wish was different

I wish that I applied to a different department of Sam's Club. I worked in the Cafe, but I think that working in the bakery would have been more fun.

Advice

Sam's Club is flexible with scheduling, so they are willing to work with a college student's schedule. In addition, there were many benefits to working at this club.

Deli Slicer

July 2020 • Columbia City, IN

What I liked

I enjoyed the overall atmosphere of the location and how willing the managers were to work around my school schedule.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more employees hired. We are short staffed throughout every shift I work. It gets frustrating, but it is still worthwhile.

Advice

My advice for this job is to be patient and keep the end goal in mind. If you get too wrapped up in the drama or lose site of the purpose of the job.

Apparel associate

January - August 2021 • Fayetteville, GA

What I liked

I like the people I worked with hands-on, and the diversity in demographics among my peers and me. 5 I got to meet all types of customers from different backgrounds and help in situations I never thought I'd be a part of.

What I wish was different

Throughout my time here I’ve experienced positives and negatives. My fellow associates played a huge role in pushing me forward. Each week there was a new issue whether it be schedule flukes, lack of workers, or blatant disrespect from higher-ups. No matter what I endeared I was always extra bubbly and positive. Working here felt like I was always on trial for something unknown to me. It was overall very draining and caused various breakdowns. Overall, my 6+ months here have helped me financially but drained me mentally.

Advice

Walmart is a great Company if you are a customer or if you are higher up on the pay scale. If not they won't treat you with the kind of respect they should, but it's still an eye-opening experience in the workplace.

Online Grocery

April 2020 • Twin Falls, ID

What I liked

I really liked that the job kept me on my feet and moving throughout the whole day. It was really helpful with keeping me busy and teaching me communication skills as well as customer service skills.

What I wish was different

We got new management right as I was coming back for the summer. I wish that the management would have let me show what skills I had before judging my capabilities and telling me what tasks I needed to do.

Advice

Just have fun! It is a good-paying job and you learn something new.

Front End Associate

April - July 2021 • Monroe, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed many of my coworkers and overall found cashiering to be a positive experience.

What I wish was different

The benefits and pay were disappointing. We got a 10% discount on non-food, non-sale, non-pharmacy items which meant basically nothing. I also know that new hires were making upwards of $2 more per hour than me which was unacceptable.

Advice

Don't go in thinking you can change the work environment here, usually you just need to be willing to go with the flow of your team leads.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more plan and structure to the tasks I was assigned.
