FYE Intern
June 2021 • San Francisco, CA
What I liked
The job/internship was only a month
What I wish was different
I wish that the leads/directors of the internship were not as demanding and a little less picky with their demands of me, as I was doing what they asked but I wasn’t copying the leads’ personal style.
We interns were given a list of SFSU student to call up to 3 times before the end of the month. I had finished this requirement about a week early because I had summer classes with finals on the last week of the month. The leads/directors informed me that they would be giving me extra work from another intern because they were unable to finish their load by the end of the month. I asked if they would pay me extra and they said no because I finished my work before the end of the month and the extra wouldn’t be considered overtime.
I also wish that the internship had informed us in the application notice that they weren’t going to pay us directly at the end of the month (June 30, 2021), they still have not paid us nor have they told us when we are getting paid.
Advice
It’s a more demeaning and taxing job than thought of at the time of applying so pace yourself.

Summer Orientation Leader
May - August 2019 • San Francisco, CA
What I liked
I was able to meet lots of new people. One of them actually turned out to be my roommate for the year! Being an orientation leader, I feel like I have found my place at SF State. I liked that I was able to develop my leadership skills as well as meet great people along the way. I made lots of connections with the people on campus. I loved doing orientation so much it made me want to be an orientation team leader for the upcoming summer!
What I wish was different
I wish I was more outspoken during orientation. I feel I was shy when it came to our debriefs, however, that was a learning experience for me on my abilities and I have been working on speaking my mind more instead of letting others speak for me.
Advice
Being involved with any organization on campus really helps you to connect with the school and a great way to make memories during your college experience.

Big Data Summer Program
June - August 2019 • San Francisco, CA
What I liked
I signed up for the big data summer program because I was curious about computers science and learning code so I applied in the mid spring and got in. I always thought that learning code was very difficult and required a lot of math skills to understand how to code. After the program had ended I learned that it is not the case and that anyone can code. Looking back at it, it was probably the best summer I have had so far during my time in college. One thing that I really enjoyed about this summer program was that we worked in small groups and over the period of 3 months we developed chemistry which made it more fun to work.
What I wish was different
Since everyone, if not most participants were new to programing, we all had to learn to program first before our research assignment was introduced. It was not that big of a deal since we were all helping each other whenever we needed help, but I still felt that it could had been less difficult if we spent a little longer on coding that way we would be more confident in knowing how to code the answers that we were searching for.
Advice
Before the program started, we weren't required to learn or read anything to prepare for the summer research. One piece of advice I would give is to email small articles to read or tips on how to prepare for the data research that we will be coding. This could had allowed the participants to conduct bigger and faster research and not be worried about how to do a task during the summer.
