Software Engineer

June - August 2021 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I liked almost all aspects of this internship. The project work was interesting, and my manager was very involved in making sure I was still enjoying my work throughout the internship. There was also a good work-life balance, and people were very approachable to ask questions.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a better way to build my network with people within Qualcomm. Being a virtual experience, it was hard to interact with interns and individuals outside my team. I would have wanted events that were more involved with having interns interact with each other more directly.

Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

The projects I worked on were technically rigorous and legitimately meaningful. The nature of the work also matched my interests in the field. Pay was great. And there are so many positions in different disciplines within Qualcomm pertaining to computer hardware and software engineering, and telecommunications.

What I wish was different

Location, I'd rather have worked at their headquarters in San Diego, where most of the other interns were. Instead I was placed at a small remote office in Boulder with only a few other interns. If you are accepted earlier, you'll be offered more choice in where you'll be placed. I was given an offer in mid April.

Software intern

May - August 2019 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

Basically everything. I interned with wireless research and development this summer. I loved my project. It was challenging, fun, and useful to the team. My team was amazing. They treated my questions, ideas, and code seriously. They were also super accepting, supportive, and candid. WRD department as a whole is a great place to work in. It's like a startup within a big company and while you can work on exciting technologies and not worry about the resources, you can still have a close relationship with your coworkers. I was able to schedule multiple 1:1 with my directors, manager, team lead to provide my feedback and learn from them.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship program can continue using the mentorship gateway because that's how I managed to connect with engineers in the R&D side of the company and score an internship with them

Advice

Communication and teamwork is really important. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.
