Protiviti

Software Engineer

June - August 2023 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I liked how I got to design and implement automated solutions, leveraging Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and machine learning for business consulting clients, driving operational efficiency and achieving cost savings, using Microsoft UI Path. I also enjoyed creating comprehensive documentation of automation processes and providing clear instructions for maintenance and troubleshooting. In addition, I had the pleasure of collaborating with clients to understand their needs, communicate project progress, and provide recommendations for digital strategies. Lastly, I had the opportunity to utilize Excel and Power BI to analyze data, prepare performance reports, and provide actionable insights to improve campaign effectiveness.

What I wish was different

"In hindsight, I believe every experience is an opportunity for growth. While my internship at Protiviti has been incredibly enriching, if I were to wish for one thing to be different, it would be a longer duration to further contribute to the exceptional work happening there. During my time, I've been fortunate to collaborate on projects that have not only sharpened my skills but have also made a tangible impact on Protiviti's mission to team up with clients to protect and enhance enterprise value by identifying, anticipating, and solving critical business problems. I'm proud to have been part of this dynamic team, and I look forward to continuing to leverage my abilities to drive innovation and excellence.

Advice

In my internship, I approached each task like a sponge soaking up knowledge in an ocean. One valuable piece of advice I'd like to share is to be a relentless learner. Much like a tree needs deep roots to withstand storms, developing a strong foundation of knowledge and skills is essential. Embrace challenges as opportunities to grow, just as a tree's branches reach higher for the sun. My thirst for knowledge drove me to seek out mentors, take on diverse projects, and continuously seek improvement. This mindset not only allowed me to excel in my tasks but also to thrive in a dynamic work environment, making me a valuable asset to any team.

What I liked

The people and company culture were very welcoming. The team and client project I worked on gave me lots of opportunities for leadership and initiative. The company has very strong values and upholds them in a way that's actively making a difference in the world. In addition, the intern trip to Austin, Texas and a boat cruise were some amazing experiences that I got to have at the beginning and end of the internship.

What I wish was different

Advice

I highly recommend reaching out to people on LinkedIn who work at companies you're looking at, and asking about their experience and the work they do. I reached out so many people at Protiviti during my summer here and made a lot of connections. Everyone was excited to give advice and talk with me.

Risk and Compliance Consultant Intern

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked how the employees cared about your interests and what you wanted to learn during the internship and catered to that.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship wasn’t remote, but there wasn’t really anything that could have been done for that.

Advice

Communicate with your engagement managers, they are super busy so you have to make sure you are on top of your communication with them.

Technology Consultant Intern (Enterprise Application Solutions)

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the mutual relationship Protiviti fostered with its interns. They invested so much time in training us in design thinking, financial analysis, and IT systems analysis, before allowing us to use our individual specialties to work on real client cases. I was able to contribute deliverables towards an ongoing consulting project for an international company and in the process, boosted my confidence in QA, data conversion, and networking. The company integrated all of its interns into the culture by inviting us to professional and socially topical panels and encouraging us to pursue professional certificates that would help kickstart our careers.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had more in-person opportunities, even though I know they would be difficult in the pandemic.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions of your superiors, especially if what you are working on has a great bearing on the project. While the client understands you are just an intern, you will have an integral role in the project(s) you are assigned to.

Consulting Intern

June - July 2020 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

The company culture and all the members of the team that I got to interact with were fantastic! The internship was well thought out and had a good balance of activities. I also got some hands on experience which is invaluable!

What I wish was different

That it had been longer. Due to COVID 19 they adjusted the length to be much shorter than anticipated. I would have loved to spend more time with the company but I am happy they gave me this opportunity.

Advice

Go into it with a positive attitude and commit to being an active participant, even over zoom! They notice your engagement.

What I liked

I loved so much about my internship. I felt like I truly experienced Protiviti's company culture and was able to participate, grow my network, and learn so many applicable skills for my career in just a few weeks.

What I wish was different

I wish the situation in general had been different, but given the pandemic and the state of things in the world, I admire the approach that they took.

Advice

In a virtual setting, it can be even more uncomfortable to be seen and heard, but participating with great energy is so essential to making a virtual setting feel closer to normal and people will thank you for it if you do it and follow your lead!

Technical Consulting Intern

June - July 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The "One Office" culture even during COVID-19 when everyone was working from home.

What I wish was different

Working side-by-side my fellow interns in the New York office as was originally planned. However, I had the opportunity to connect with other interns at our sister offices more frequently by working virtually.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! Everyone on your team will be more than happy to give you guidance.

Consulting Intern

June - August 2019 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I got to experience what it was like to travel for work. Living in a new city was also a great experience, but that was something I chose. That being said, the company did a lot to ensure all of us interns had a great summer and organized out-of-work activities for us. The actual work itself was pretty good and I got to work on two different streams/projects in my 8 weeks there.

What I wish was different

The traveling portion of it was a little hectic on my end. Some other interns had a lot of trouble and delay starting on their first projects due to high secrecy of the projects. Luckily it did not affect me, but it definitely hindered their experience and had them doing nothing for days or even weeks on end.

Advice

Reach out to whoever you can within the company. Talking to many people will help you stand out and really get a feel for the culture. Also don't be afraid to take people up on their offers to chat or have coffee. Everyone has a story to tell and sometimes those stories help you out in the end.

Risk and Compliance Intern

June - August 2018 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I enjoyed the broad range of projects that I was able to be a part of. I was able to see the many different roles and functions of a consulting team. I learned valuable information regarding financial service operations, more specifically in the anti-money laundering department. I was able to get a feel for traveling for work by having the opportunity to travel to five different states. I got to form long lasting relationships with my team members, and I am very excited to start full time next summer.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship would have been just a little bit longer. It wasn't until the end that I started to gain a strong understanding for the work that I was contributing to. I was really starting to enjoy what I was doing and I wish I could have seen our project from beginning to end.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like to share is to not be afraid to go out of your comfort zone. I originally found the posting to this internship on glass door, so i went ahead and applied. I applied to many different locations, most of which I have never even been to before. When the recruiter for the Charlotte location reached out to me I was completely shocked. I moved to a brand new city that I had never been to before, and it was the most humbling experience I have had. I was able to learn so much and had so many different opportunities to expand my skills and knowledge. Without taking the risk, I would never be where I am today!

IAFA Process Intern

June - August 2018 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

The people at Protiviti were incredibly helpful in learning everything I needed to know over the course of the internship. The culture was great! I got to work with several clients of different types and gained lots of meaningful experiences.

What I wish was different

My honest only complaint is that I wish the internship were longer, it went by incredibly quickly and I wish I had a few more engagements I could have worked on to gain more experience. It would have been nice to work on a greater variety of clients.

Advice

This was an incredibly rewarding experience that I would recommend to anyone. The culture is great, so definitely take advantage of a great group of people to work with!

Business Process Consultant

June - August 2018 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

- Had the opportunity to see my work develop into a final deliverable, presented to clients - Exposed to multiple different facets of Protiviti's business (Technology, Internal Audit, Business Performance Improvement) - Worked on a wide variety of projects; exposed to many assignments I was unfamiliar with and forced to learn quickly / efficiently on the spot

What I wish was different

More travel

Advice

It is the perfect company and career for an adventurous, flexible, analytical yet social individual - seeking travel and a variety of different experiences - who is also willing to be uncomfortable and recognize that they are not the smartest in the room. (analytical job that requires significant soft skills as well to excel in the role and engage with clients)

Internal Audit and Financial Advisory - IT Audit Intern

June - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The people, the San Francisco office fostered a great culture that made going to work every day a lot of fun, but very rewarding. At Protiviti you are treated like a salaried employee, meaning that your work isn't different just because you are an intern.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask to get on a tech startup (Twilio) and an established corporation (RHI), this will help you to understand the culture difference between the two.
