I LOVED the team I worked with this summer - a bright, cross-functional team that was focused on winning.

What I wish was different

Nothing really. I have enjoyed working for Meijer for 3 years so not much came as a complete surprise to me.

Advice

Work hard. This means showing up early and staying late to get work done - this does not mean milking the clock and being dishonest on company time. Always be diligent. Perform at a high level and complete quality work.

What I liked

The job suited my skill set and challenged me to work long hours with difficult people. But this made me learn to appreciate the kind customers and practice showing kindness to every person, regardless of their behavior. The Meijer community is also very kind and accepting. The team was very personable and wanted to help me.

What I wish was different

I worked second shift which didn't line up well with my family's schedules, so I missed a few celebrations and reunions. Also, you are tempted to wish that everyone knows how to be a better customer because cashiering is actually quite difficult.

Advice

Make friends! It can feel really lonely when you're mostly working by yourself for a long time. Step out of your comfort zone and be personable with customers (especially the regular ones) and your teammates. It makes the time go by much faster and more pleasantly.

I enjoyed the people that I worked with. The days go by fast because they are usually busy. The produce department has a nice environment. And I worked many hours, and that was nice.

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish would have been different were working second shifts every once in a while.

I wish the phone distribution to the employees for the different departments wasn't so much. Like sometime I would find myself having 4 or 5 phones for the different departments.

What I liked

Meijer has the unique ability of being a private company. With this ability, they are able to move more freely with company based decisions. I believe that through this Meijer is able to create a culture that is far from original. Strong employee relationships along with truly an open door policy makes Meijer a fantastic company to work for.

What I wish was different

Every company has ways to make the internship experience better. Meijer is no different in this aspect, the communication was slightly weak until the start of the internship but they are working hard to change this facet of the experience.

Advice

Make connections, go out of your way and talk to people whose jobs interest you. Everyone is willing to talk to you, make the most of your time there.
