Meijer

Cashier

September - November 2019 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

Meijer is incredibly flexible with student schedules; you can tell them your availability, how many/what hours you want to work, and they will make sure to make that happen for you. If you're transparent about your availability from the start, they will give you a consistent weekly schedule that you can count on. The job itself is nice! 5 hour minimum shifts, with all of them going by very quickly as you're always ringing people up, cleaning, or pushing carts. Would definitely recommend as part time student work.

What I wish was different

Nothing awful from my memory! Just be sure of your schedule and availability from the start; any times you say you are available to work? If they are a 'non preferred time' (e.g. Saturday/Sunday), it will be a requirement for your hiring that you work that time always.

Advice

Show up on time, be professional, don't let any bad moments/interactions get under your skin. It's definitely a lot at first, but if you keep your head up you can enjoy your time here!

Every coworker at this job has been extremely helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish that the managers that I had in my department stayed because they really made it a better work environment.

Advice

Meijer is a decent place to work for, with decent pay. You get raises every 700 hours, health insurance, 401K's, you can be apart of the union, and you have a chance of becoming a team leader if you work hard enough.

Tax Compliance Intern

May - August 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I was the only tax intern, so I received a lot of exposure to different taxation concepts. Meijer's culture is phenomenal and they clearly take their interns seriously. I liked living at home while being able to save money from my internship.

What I wish was different

I realized that public accounting may be a better fit as it offers more flexibility with travel and office location. I also wish I got to know other interns better, but being the only intern within the tax department, I found it challenging.

Advice

Know that you are being taken seriously and Meijer is actively looking to hire interns for full-time.

Produce Clerk

June - August 2019 • Mount Pleasant, MI

What I liked

The job itself was pretty easy and repetitive, so after the first week it was an easy routine to get into.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been more employees. I was a part time worker working full time hours every week because they didn't have anyone else to work. My body suffered from the constant heavy lifting and my mental health suffered from dealing with rude customers and a manager that caused me so much anxiety. The also had me switching between first and second shift so often that it was hard on my sleep schedule.

Advice

Make friends with your co-workers. I didn't plan on it because it was just a summer job and the first month was really rough but once I started making friends, I was able to vent to people who understood the struggles that I was going through with the job.
