External Flow Assembly

July - August 2020 • Kokomo, IN

What I liked

The work was very simple and the job had very little pressure.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the courage to step out of my comfort zone sooner to apply for this job earlier.

Advice

Try not to balance academics along with two jobs with demanding work hours. Fortunately, I had the drive to work and gain college credits at a local community college, but it was very exhausting.

Quality Inspector

June 2020 • Warren, MI

What I liked

Loved the attention to detail, working on an assembly line, and the connections I made!

What I wish was different

The only thing, is I wish I was closer(I’m an hour long commute away). Housing would have been cool!

Advice

Make sure you know EVERY part of the assembly line in quality, it helps to know this when an error is found. You can go directly to the section to troubleshoot the error.

Industrial Engineering Intern

June 2020 • Lockport, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed the experience offered to me at General Motors. I was able to work with multiple different departments at the manufacturing plant. Some of the projects I enjoyed the most were creating and editing layouts, working with quality engineers to review products, and do trial runs.

What I wish was different

I don't think I would change anything about my internship, I was constantly learning new things and pushed to do my best work.

Advice

Search out more projects to work on. If there is ever a dull moment don't just sit and wait around for a new project to fall in your lap. Go out and ask your supervisor to give you more work or ask if there is anything else for you to work on. This along with seeking out projects you are interested in. If you see something that you could make better, go out and work with others to solve that problem.

Cost Knowledge Management Intern

June - August 2020 • Warren, MI

What I liked

Company culture and my team

What I wish was different

I wish there was more communication between interns, and I felt my work was very theoretical and detached from the product.

Advice

Always communicate with your boss. Whether it be what you want to gain from the internship, projects you want to be included in, where you see yourself in a few months, etc. you should be open about your goals with your boss.

Environmental Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Yuma, AZ

What I liked

The people I got to work with were very kind and helpful, really amazing work environment with people who definitely cared about me and my success as an intern.

What I wish was different

Sometimes it felt as though there wasn’t much work available to keep me busy, which I think was largely due to COVID-19. I also would have enjoyed more hands-on work.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to make connections with people outside of the facility you work in or of asking questions.

Operations Supervisor

June 2020 • Warren, MI

What I liked

LOVE being in charge of organization of both people and production processes.

What I wish was different

GM offering for housing would have been nice, or being closer. I have about an hour commute every day

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions! Don’t let the “big” guys intimidate you. Go in and be the best you, you can be. GM is very particular on their own processes(for a good reason - they work)

Global Purchasing and Supply Chain Intern

June - August 2020 • Warren, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed the challenges that came with working in the supply chain space during a pandemic. GM loses millions of dollars for every day one of its assembly plants is shut down because they're missing a key shipment of parts, so it was up to me and my team to ensure that all of our suppliers were going to be able to keep the supply of parts flowing despite work stoppages, mandated government shutdowns, and other issues that emerged throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

The internship was virtual because of the pandemic; typically the interns all live together in GM housing in Michigan and become really close, but that didn't happen this summer. It was still a good experience, but there wasn't that same sense of community among the interns that we would have received if we were in person.

Advice

Take advantage of your time at GM to get to know all of their different business functions and areas of operation. With a company their size, they have close to every imaginable role, so I would reach out to people across the organization and set up a few virtual coffee chats a week just to learn about their job. I'd encourage anyone who interns for GM, or any other large company, to do the same.

Electrical Hardware Intern

June - September 2020 • Warren, MI

What I liked

General Motors really was committed to providing a mutually beneficial internship experience. My project was challenging and I gained a lot of hands-on industry experience. After working at GM it is clear to me how seriously GM is taking on its mission of Zero Emissions, Zero Congestion, and Zero Fatalities. Also on a personal level, while working at GM I was surprised to see the newfound emphasis and value placed on diversity and progressive thinking. GM is no longer an old-fashioned Detroit automaker, but rather a true innovator in new tech and workforce values.

Electrical Quality Engineer Intern

June - August 2020 • Flint, MI

What I liked

My supervisors were very helpful in exposing me to different parts of manufacturing. They helped me network to other parts of the plant and even to other students in the product department. I had responsibilities that impacted the parts on the automobile. I was able to physically handle the parts and evaluate their function.

What I wish was different

Since my internship was shortened due to COVID-19, there were no big projects to work on. I wish I had a main focus to work on to be able to know the details and the work required of a Quality Engineer.
