General Motors

Mechanical Engineering Intern

June 2018 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

I liked having real full-time level projects with real monetary gains/savings for the company. Certainly not busy work. Having a company and boss willing to spend ten's of thousands of dollars on your designs that should benefit the company even more is very confidence inspiring and rewarding.

What I wish was different

More consistant workload. When designing and purchasing equipment I was very busy. Waiting for items to come in from machine shops I had some slow days I would look for more work.

Advice

Confidence is key. Theyre not looking for a student to come in and act like a know it all. There's a middle ground, but I would error on the side of caution. Watch, listen and learn from the leaders in the company. When its your time to knockout a project, be very thorough. Put together a quick powerpoint explaining the objective, results and most importantly your reasoning for your conclusions/thought process.

Vehicle Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Warren, MI

What I liked

Great environment and co workers. Most of my coworkers were always eager to help and teach me useful skills for the job.

What I wish was different

Had some payroll issues towards the end of my internship.

Advice

I encourage everyone to go learn what its like to work in industry! In my college experience, professors always encouraged research positions and graduate school, but I would have never thought that I would enjoy working in industry unless I gave it a try.

Manufacturing Engineer

May - August 2017 • Lockport, NY

What I liked

The type of work I did was very interesting. I was put with a "mentor" I suppose is how I would put it. He gave me direction and helped me understand how certain procedures and processes worked. Very helpful having an experienced engineer with me.

What I wish was different

Being allowed to work more hours. The contract GM has with UB makes it so that UB pays us while we work at GM. I'm not sure if this is actually why we are only allowed to work 28 hours a week, but this is how I understand it. Since we under state payroll if we work full time we need insurance benefits offered to us because technically we are UB state employees. That might not be 100% correct because if you come back as a graduate student, you can work full time but that might be something completely separate. Either way, you can only work 28 hours a week which hinders your economic gain and the amount of experience you can get.

Advice

Do your best and don't be afraid to ask for help from people on the floor. Just introduce yourself as a UB Summer intern and most of the floor workers will understand.
