General Motors

Manufacturing Execution System/Database Developer Co-op

May 2019 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

This was my best co-op experience, I actually learned a lot about the ongoing process of tying together engineering on the manufacturing floor and software development.

What I wish was different

Not really much, my last co-op experience pales in comparison so since I only have that to compare to I have no complaints.

Advice

Never stop learning, you don't know everything and sometimes you might think you know something but there could be something that you are missing.

CAD Design Intern

June - August 2019 • Warren, MI

What I liked

Working for GM was a great opportunity to work in a big industry and be valued for your work and not just a temporary intern. They offered lots of training and paired you up with a mentor who was always willing to help when you were stuck on a project and was overall a great learning experience. You are accountable for getting your work done for your group as well as working with other interns on special projects.

What I wish was different

You are assigned to work in one specific group, which is great over the time period because you learn a lot about that particular section, but I wish there would've been a chance to see what other groups jobs entailed to find out which area you like best when returning.

Advice

Definitely take advantage of the intern events and do as many tours as you can. It provides a lot of exposure to things that even some of the regular employees don't get the chance to do.

Business Operations Intern

May - August 2019 • Grand Blanc, MI

What I liked

I loved how hands on the internship was! The interns received projects that made a difference in the company. All the interns were provided with an official mentor and all the employees we worked with were willing and able to offer their help and expertise to ensure the interns had a successful summer. The pay was competitive and they also have an option for paid housing if you live a certain distance from your assigned workplace.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to have a longer assignment with the company because I had such a great experience. I will be returning next summer however!

Advice

As with anything, you get out what you put in. GM will provide you the tools to succeed, however you have to use them. It’s a challenging internship so make sure to get any advice/help that you need to make the best of it.

Auto Design Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Warren, MI

What I liked

The culture at GM is very welcoming and very helpful, at least in the design groups. Everyone was willing to help me with different issues I had.

What I wish was different

Interns get to go on tours to see the many facets of GM, but there is still a lot of behind-the-desk work. I wish it was a little more hands-on.

Advice

Make sure to talk with other interns and build up your network of people.

Exce Intern : Interior Purchasing

May - August 2019 • Warren, MI

What I liked

The whole overall experience. The team I was apart of and the company as a whole pushed me to be the best I can be, while making me feel comfortable as well. From my first day to my last I felt welcomed, and as though I was in good position to be successful. I also felt as though my position was beneficial to my team, and that the work I did was truly appreciated.

What I wish was different

To be honest the only thing I wish had been different, would be the time frame of 12 weeks. I would love to do a year round internship with them.

Advice

Push yourself to be successful. The steps to do so will be there, but it is up to you to take those steps.

Group Leader

May - August 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

My favorite part of working as a Group Leader at General Motors was the experience of leading a team of people through the daily tasks of making production rates. It was such an experience to see first hand how the machines, robots, and assembly line work together with people to obtain a final product. From this experience, I will be able to take the knowledge I learned and apply it to my engineering expertise.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish would have been different was the training I received. I found that if I didn't go above and beyond what was expected, that I would not obtain the training I needed. It took a lot of me asking and continuing asking for more training to obtain the required training I felt was needed for the job task I was given.

Advice

If you enjoy being a leader, this is a great job experience for you. If you plan on working on the manufacturing floor or designing anything that goes onto the manufacturing floor, I would highly suggest this experience. Learning how the design of machines and robots can significantly impact the processing of an assembly line will only help you become a better engineer.

What I liked

I liked everything about it: the hours, ALL the employees that worked there were very helpful and welcoming, I learned so much, and I enjoyed the work itself. We also visited other GM plants (one in Tonawanda, one in Rochester) which was an awesome experience too.

What I liked

This internship was very hands on. I was assigned multiple projects on the first day. This may sound very overwhelming, however my team leaders were very helpful. There were also a lot of other interns in my area, so I had people to hang out with. I believe this is the best location to take an internship in.
