Field service Engineer

June 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I liked the fact that they were training me on so many devices. There were some medical devices that I had only seen on paper but with this apprenticeship, I got to not only see but work on some of them.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more in the engineering sector and not the field service sector. I liked travelling from one hospital to another but I hated the fact that I had no set schedule. Some weeks I get 40hours other weeks I don't.

Internships and apprenticeship are very vital in career advancement. It gives you an idea of what courses you should take after returning to school.

Sales Intern

January - May 2017 • Cincinnati, OH

The office was very new and I had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects with other interns. I had a mentor who previously interned at GE and was able to attend manager meetings, team events, and join GE's affinity networks.

What I wish was different

GE was not rehiring interns at the end of the program.

Advice

This experience was unique, but does not provide any external, outside sales experience in the field. You will be working on things involving project management, data entry, Salesforce, and some assistance in sales campaigns.

Digital Technology Co-Op

June - August 2018 • Niskayuna, NY

What I liked

This position was catered directly to my experience, knowledge and interests. It most definitely expanded my current interests as well.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to collaborate more with the rest of my team. my role was working directly with the IT Controller and CISO, but the rest of the team had significant technical experience, and I wish I had an environment where I was tasked to collaborate with others around me more that weren't directly associated with my project.

Advice

All organizations have different interests at stake. It is important to use the current experience to understand how other organizations may choose to operate.

Systems Engineer

May - August 2017 • Erie, PA

What I liked

GE exposes their interns to many sides of the business and allows the interns to participate in product development and engineering. Interns at GE control their experience - the more you choose to get involved the more opportunity you have to network, form relationships, and get exposed to the technology that drives the business.

What I wish was different

I wish I had spent more time and effort getting to know the people I worked with.

Advice

You control the experience. Do not wait for a manager or coworker to give you a project or introduce you to someone you would like to meet. Take initiative and most coworkers will be willing to help.
