GE Aviation Intern/Co-Op

August - November 2018 • Loves Park, IL

What I liked

My management team is flexible, understanding, and compromising. They understood when I had an illness or a Rose-Hulman Career Fair to attend they enabled me to work around these issues and have a flexible schedule including making up some hours on Saturday's to reach that 40 hour work week. I appreciated the personal conversations and advising tips for constant professional development/improvement.

What I wish was different

I wish I had an engineering internship versus a managerial position/ oversight position. I was given the two different leadership programs offered at GE including the OMLP Program and the Edison Program. I was driven towards the Edison Program, however when I arrived to Loves Park, it became immediately obvious that my position was OMLP driven. I spoke in depth with the current OMLP and they told me that I would have to personally push to get transferred to the engineering side of GE Aviation or else I would continue down the OMLP Program pipeline, which unfortunately, was not what attracted me to this Fall Co-Op. As a side note, the housing options listed on the Co-Op/Intern website was completely inaccurate. None of the apartment options suited what I was looking for and those need modifications. You will have to find your own housing and pay out of your own pocket. This meant that there was no money to be made, living paycheck to paycheck was reality.

Advice

Be ready to learn at a rapid pace. I was exposed to Quality, Supplier Quality, and Inspection. Additionally, have a strong background with Office (Microsoft), reading/understanding CAD, and be prepared to offer lots of analytical data with numbers and percentages. If you are completing your Mid-term evaluation or your Final evaluation, be specific and correlate how your projects and goals match. Don't give a simple answer, rather try giving a percentage of improvement. For example, I was responsible for Inspection's Hold Cage and lowering their WIP Inventory Costs. Before I began, the costs were well over 600k. In my three month rotation, we eliminated 60% of this WIP inventory, opening 360k of free cash for GE to use towards their end of quarter evaluation. Having the percentages and numbers will only make your case stronger when reapplying for a second rotation. I hope this helps.
