GE Aerospace

Engine Design Engineer

May - August 2018 • Jacksonville, FL

What I wish was different

Advice

My experience working for GE Aviation this summer was everything I wanted it to be and so much more. Throughout the course of my internship, I would often hear full time employees tell others full time members, as well as the other interns, to take the hard jobs. They encouraged us to take on the jobs that scared us, the jobs that seemed impossible, because those jobs were going to have the highest pay offs. Of course, they were correct! I volunteered to work on jobs that I knew would challenge me and push me to my limits and it was my work on those jobs that really showed who I am to those above me. The challenging tasks not only made my internship that much more valuable, but it also made it so much more fun. Saying goodbye to my projects this summer was one of the most difficult things I had to do, because I had become so invested in them. My projects had been an incredible learning experience that I'm hopeful I will be able to experience again. So, If i had to give a piece of advice based off of my summer internship, I would tell you to take on the toughest challenge, go for the jobs that no one else wants. Because those are the jobs that will benefit you the most. Those are the jobs that will leave you wanting more.

What I wish was different

I wish it were closer but GE is such a big company that they have many different sites across the US.

Engineering Co-op

May 2018 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

Extensive co-op program with plenty of opportunities for learning, socializing, and volunteering.

What I wish was different

With many co-ops in one area, work becomes spread thin and there can be a lot of down time.

Advice

If you aren't getting enough to do, speak up. Get to know the people you work with and take initiative.

Aerospace Engineering Intern

May - July 2018 • Bangalore, Karnataka

What I liked

They had a great mentorship program, the internship was very well organized and we all had one project to work on, so it was very rewarding.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer.

Advice

Most internship experiences depend on how you involve yourself and how much you are willing to take up and it was the same at GE. People who wanted to do the bare minimum were allowed to do that, and those who wanted to do multiple projects were given the right resources for that too.

What I liked

I loved my job and the people I was working with. They were only s couple years older than me so it was cool getting to see where I might be in a couple years.

What I wish was different

The location. I was isolated from everyone I knew this summer.

Advice

Go out of your comfort zone. I learned so much this summer partly because I would ask questions and ask for help.

My manager situation was complicated because I was assigned a manager that was retiring in the middle of my rotation. Other than that, everything was ideal.

DTLP Intern

May - August 2017 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

I found the work environment and people to be incredible. It’s a big company that feels like a start up environment in a lot of ways. While they were seeming to have a bit of financial trouble as a larger company, the intern group was still treated well and I had an amazing time.

What I wish was different

I wouldn’t change much of anything besides wanting to be in a different city. Cincinnati is nice, but since I knew the area I wanted to experience somewhere else.

Advice

Make sure to take advantage of the connections you make, everyone is always moving in GE and you never know when you’ll see a person later in your career or time at GE.

Mechanical Engineer In

May - July 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I had a great experience interacting with my team and felt like I was given projects appropriate to my skill level that challenged me.

What I wish was different

There's not much that I would have changed. The only thing I noticed early on was how it took a while to complete trainings, get badge access, etc. before I could start working on my projects.

Advice

I used this internship as an opportunity to meet as many people as I could and tour as many of their buildings and manufacturing floors as possible.

Digital Technology Leadership Program Intern - Close Simplification and BI Lead

June - August 2017 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

Fantastic internship program - interns were given a lot of responsibility which was unexpected considering the size of the company. I got to work with some incredibly talented people and was encouraged to pursue my own interests as well ask working on my job. I was matched very well with the project I was given for the summer so I felt I could really excel, but every day I was challenged to improve my skills to improve my project overall.

What I wish was different

We came into the program and were told that they were looking to hire a lot of the interns, however in the end they didn't hire as many as we were originally told. Amazing experience - wish it would have led to a full time job, but the majority of interns, were not hired.

Advice

Take advantage of the open door policy that GE has - ask any full time employee of the company to go with you to get coffee to learn more about their career and the company.

My co-workers in Madison were very encouraging and inclusive. There is a great culture at the ARC Madison campus.

Field service Engineer

June 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I liked the fact that they were training me on so many devices. There were some medical devices that I had only seen on paper but with this apprenticeship, I got to not only see but work on some of them.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more in the engineering sector and not the field service sector. I liked travelling from one hospital to another but I hated the fact that I had no set schedule. Some weeks I get 40hours other weeks I don't.

Advice

Internships and apprenticeship are very vital in career advancement. It gives you an idea of what courses you should take after returning to school.
