Facebook

software engineer intern

May - August 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

I like the work culture there. You also get to have actual code deployed to users.

What I wish was different

Less stressful.

Advice

Be ready to work a lot.

Data Science Intern

June - September 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

The data science role at Facebook is an embedded data science role, so you work closely within a specific team. This is a really interesting role for anyone who is curious how data science can be used to directly shape product strategy.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to do more rigorous analytical work. There wasn't much work involving more rigorous/mathematical data science

Advice

Make a strong effort to get to know your team and how you can best support them. A successful internship will give you valuable experience with not only your personal intern project but also with how a team operates.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

They did an excellent job of matching students to their interests. I had a love for AI and was placed in the machine learning division and had a lot of my team mates working on research.

What I wish was different

Nothing really.

Advice

It is valuable to communicate with your team and meet other interns and employees.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

I loved the opportunities for learning, through talks with company leaders (intern talks with Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, Kevin Systrom, etc.) and through the project.

Software Engineering Intern

June - September 2016 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

It paid well. The housing was nice and free. I lived in Mountain View, which was next to the Bay, so I could go out on runs. My fellow interns were nice.

What I wish was different

I wish my project had been more interesting. I had to write testing code -- for network switches.... Also, the company felt very insulated from the outside world. My internship became my life, and it wasn't a fun job either.

Advice

If you're into theoretical CS, then network testing is (most probably) NOT for you. If you're going to intern at Facebook, choose your team wisely.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2017 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

The mentorship was great! I learned a lot through my manager who was extremely patient and helped answer any questions I had. It was also cool to get to work closely in a team on a project that had the potential to have real impact at the company.

What I wish was different

I felt like my specific team was a little more insular and I do wish I was able to have more of a say in what my project was. Instead, interns there are more-or-less given a project. While the project is assigned based on a pre-internship survey, it would have been nice to have more autonomy over what I worked on ultimately.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! Whether to your team or your manager! They don't expect you to know everything and it would be way better for getting more progress on your project. Plus, most full-time employees are more than happy to help!

Global Marketing Solutions Intern

June - August 2019 • Austin, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed the company culture, specifically the full-time employees working within my vertical. They were really eager to help us. Despite the fact that they knew some of us would go elsewhere or jump between tech companies, they made sure to answer our questions, were available for meetings, and connected with us online. This was a value that was shared throughout the company and made me view the company in a new light as well as created an amazing workspace.

What I wish was different

The length of the internship. I wish it had been longer!

Advice

Be ok not knowing the answer, the learning process is the experience.

Production Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

I loved nearly everything about this experience. I learned an incredible amount and enjoyed my work.

What I wish was different

I would have liked it to be longer.

Advice

Production Engineering is just as highly valued by the company as SWEs, so don't sweat it if you wanted SWE instead. Their work is exceptionally similar, especially as an intern.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

It was a really good learning experience and it allowed me to meet a lot of new people in a low-risk environment. I learned a lot about Android Studio Projects and how to make android apps as well as was able to experience the Facebook community first hand and find friends that I felt comfortable around.

What I wish was different

I wish the project was something a little bit more substantial. Something that we could actually see be put to use instead of something that was just thrown away at the end of the summer.

Advice

Talk to full-time employees! So many people are eager to talk to you about their experiences, especially if you're genuinely interested!

What I liked

Great for software engineering beginners (freshman and sophomores). Amazing location and great employee culture and benefits

What I wish was different

Advice

Go in looking to get more out of it than just your engineering project. The point is to gain CS experience while also learning about how the tech industry functions as a whole. Ask questions and meet with people you want to learn more about.
