Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

Facebook has a very high standard for their Software Engineering Interns, and I was treated just like any other Software Engineer on my team. This means I was expected to meet the same standard of my code, efficiency, communication, etc. as the full time employees. This challenged me a lot, and I was able to grow my coding skills tremendously throughout this experience. I also got to decide what project I would work on for the internship, and make almost all the decisions affecting my project.

What I wish was different

Completing such a difficult Software Engineering Internship after only my 2nd year of school was very hard. I had to work long hours in order to produce the quality and amount of code expected of me. Although this had a great outcome for me, others might not be prepared to succeed at this internship after only their 2nd year.

Advice

My best piece of advice is to always ask questions and ask for help during your coop. Your manager and team are there to support you and help you succeed, and they should be more than happy to do so! I'm very grateful for how supportive my manager was of me, and without such a great relationship with manager I don't think I would have performed nearly as well as I did.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

Facebook offered a fun and engaging internship program. They had a lot of support and pre-internship programs that helped me throughout the summer. My mentor and team were amazing and helpful, pushing me in different directions to develop various skills. I loved being able to interact with other departments easily, working cross-functionally almost every day. The food was my favorite, though.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more work-life balance. I think my team was in crunch time for most of my internship, so I ma have been unlucky, but I ended up staying a couple late nights to finish something on time.

Advice

I would advise people to ask a lot of questions, and not to hesitate asking, ever. It's unrealistic to think that an intern can perform at top performance without knowing where to do what or how to do something in a new platform. Everyone there is kind and helpful, and you won't receive shame for not knowing something that you couldn't have known on your own.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

Mature company with great internal tooling. Work was fast paced, but helpful peers made it feasible and enjoyable.

What I wish was different

I wish that the work had played on my strengths and interests a little bit more, but with the number of interns that Facebook hires, I understand that it is not always possible. Furthermore, I also was able to learn new things as a result of this, so maybe it was for the best.

Advice

Be ready to work pretty hard. Hit the ground running, ask a lot of questions and really take ownership.

Content Strategy Intern

May - August 2018 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

Interns are treated like full-time employees, and that sense of autonomy was very rewarding. The work itself was absolutely incredible — working on developing a platform with two billion users means that even the smallest details make a huge impact. I also felt extremely lucky to be working on the Social Good team, as it dealt directly with leveraging Facebook's massive scale to do substantial good in the world.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

At Facebook, I was surrounded by arguably some of the most brilliant minds in the world on a daily basis. One might assume that meant that there were a lot of egos rubbing up against each other. However, that couldn't be further from the truth — everyone there was incredibly humble. My coworkers at Facebook taught me that modesty is the most effective value to combine with intelligence. It helps build an innately positive and collaborative environment where truly amazing ideas can be created.

Product Design Intern

May - August 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

- Amazingly well-organized internship. Incredible events, housing, socialization with other interns. I cannot stress how amazing the benefits are-- completely paid corporate housing, incredible food, and a million other things. You will live in luxury. - 2 weeks of orientation to get new designers up to speed - Incredible autonomy, really dedicated manager - Constant and well-defined feedback

What I wish was different

The only issue I had had nothing to do with the intern program and more to do with Facebook as a company-- it is very much a stress build-things-fast culture, and engineering always comes first, so standing up for yourself as a designer and pushing back / being proactive is crucial. It is a very social company and there are a million meetings. Designers at Facebook don't code so if you want to see your design actually get shipped you have to be able to convince others/constantly build consensus. Most design interns won't see their designs shipped within their internship for this reason.

Advice

Be proactive from the beginning about working with engineers and PMs. Facebook lacks a clear hierarchy and your effectiveness depends on how well you build consensus and reach out to others.
