What I liked

I love working with medications and helping people feel better physically and emotionally. It’s a very useful job as everything I work with on a daily basis carries over to my nursing degree

I wish it was not a retail pharmacy so I could spend less time working with insurances and more time learning.

Advice

I recommend a job in the pharmacy for every nursing or pharmacy student. I am very grateful for all I’ve learned.

Its good to try different things within your field of study. With biology specifically theres so many different career paths you can take. This experience may help narrow it down to what you want or don’t want to do as a career.

What I liked

The thing that I liked most about working at CVS was that it gave me the opportunity to explore my choice of career whilst making money. While also helping prepare me for pharmacy school.

What I wish was different

I had issues surrounding the amount of work they tried to place upon me and not enough competent staff to help accomplish the daily task that make the pharmacy run. I was the only tech there that actually cared and in the end my value wasn't seen so I had to excuse myself from the company.

Advice

When working for a major corporation such as CVS, make sure that you document everything. And don't let anyone pressure you into doing more than you are being paid for especially if it interferes with your studies.

The other technicians are experienced and helpful. I just got my pharmacy certification and have learned an abundance of material applicable to my future in the medical field.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gotten my certification sooner than this year since I am going to nursing school.

Advice

Always as questions if you are unsure. Some medications sound, look, and do similar things in the body. Insurances are also difficult but with practice and help you can become a pro at dealing with them.

The opportunity to interact with patients and learn more about common drugs, as well as the process in which prescriptions get filled.

What I wish was different

I wish that our store was better staffed. The high stress environment can be difficult and there's definitely a learning curve. It can be frustrating when we are very behind due to lack of staffing.

Advice

I would recommend pre-pharmacy students to find a job as a Pharmacy Technician to experience the community pharmacy setting, and to start understanding the role that Pharmacists play in patients' care.

on job training and medicial/insurance experience that helps with my academic path as a pre-med student

That I had earned my certification earlier and gained more experience before college because it is hard to find time during the school year.

Advice

Start using Handshake to find jobs early in the year for summer jobs- around February or March- because it is very difficult to find a job that fulfills all your expectations when you do not give yourself enough time to filter through and find the perfect opportunity for you.

I liked the people that I worked with, and I enjoyed helping patients figure out their prescriptions.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been better management and that we had enough hours to do our job to the best of our ability.

Advice

It would have been an important experience if I had been going into Pharmacy as a career choice, but for me personally, it was more stress than I could handle at such a crucial time in my life. Being in school full time for something other than pharmacy does not make it easy to work in a pharmacy, especially because of the demand hours.
