Systems Engineer

May - August 2023 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

The people I worked there were amazing, very helpful and accepting of my little to no knowledge entering this field for the first time in a professional experience.

What I wish was different

I wish my mentor situation was handled a bit differently. I could have extracted more from my internship had I had a bit better guidance and mentorship.

Advice

BE HERE NOW! It is so incredibly easy to get distracted with things around you and not be mentally present for the things at hand, and that is something you should avoid!

Inventory control

November 2017 • Royal Oak, MI

What I liked

I enjoy being in the hospital environment, even if my job doesn't have as much patient contact that I may want. Also, I cant complain about the pay with added premiums. Not to mention they hired me for weekends and a rotating day during the week, which works great during the school sessions.

What I wish was different

There's not much to complain about, other than the occasional thing here or there.

Advice

Its hard to get into a hospital, or at least takes time to get interviewed or hired in. If its really a experience you want to pursue, then be patient and keep applying to anywhere. I applied to many different positions, just to get a foot in the door and gain some experience working in a hospital.

Human Resources Intern

May - July 2016 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

Every day was different and there was always an opportunity for you to learn something new.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish is that my internship would have been longer. I learned so much in only three months I didn't want it to end.

Advice

Always ask questions throughout your entire internship. You are there to learn and the best way to learn is to ask questions.

Research Assistant

June - August 2019 • Royal Oak, MI

What I liked

I liked that Beaumont offered a glimpse of the way clinical research works and all the protections and processes that go on to allow clinical research to occur. Additionally, if you somehow manage to connect with the right people, they may be insightful to guiding on a better path for your future college decisions (what to study, what specialities are best for you, etc.)

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a team to interact with and a sense of purpose. I was sat down at a desk on my first day, was told what I had to do, and was simply left without much else. The expectation was to sit at the desk from 8am to 5pm everyday, and if you had questions, save them for when someone comes to check on you. My supervisor rarely ever checked on me and made no effort to help onboard me or even tell me where her office was or how to reach her. You're just there to as an unpaid number pusher for someone who doesn't want to do their job while other people in the lab sit around doing nothing. There was also zero flexibility if you have even the most minor commitment outside to being glued to the desk of the basement of Beaumont. If you weren't there for any part of your 8am-5pm, they will be the first to tell you, yet management remains absent to answer your questions about the research. There was no challenge, no testing of your abilities, no chance to learn, no interaction with any other researchers or staff, just testing your abilities to type into a spreadsheet.

Advice

If you have no other chance of securing an internship and are okay working 45 hours per week without any compensation and you just want something to put on your resume, I would consider being a research assistant with Beaumont. Otherwise, keep looking! There are much much better opportunities to be had, but this in many ways lacks any mode of personal/professional/academic development.

Certified Nurse Aide

May 2019 • Troy, MI

What I liked

I love working with other people, especially in an environment that is geared towards caring and connecting with patients. My experience at the hospital has been nothing but rewarding. I have learned numerous hands-on skills, expanded my knowledge within the health field, been able to practice one-on-one care with patients and also met life long mentors that have helped shaped me into a better care provider. If you are looking for a one of a kind experience before entering Medical School, PA School, Nursing School, etc., I highly recommend getting involved in this kind of field ahead of time. It is a great opportunity to network as well as grow and develop personally.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have had access to more hours and maybe more shadowing opportunities!

Advice

Ask questions! The more questions I ask in this job, the better, I truly believe, I will perform in my career in Health Care. Asking questions not only shows that you care and are ready to learn, but it is a great conversation starter with your coworkers. Having friends in any kind of work environment is important, especially when in a fast moving hospital.

Registered Nurse

July 2019 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I loved how thorough the orientation was for my position. I transferred from a step down unit to a critical care unit within my same hospital system (Beaumont) and I felt very prepared leaving orientation. Even with previous nursing experience, being an ICU nurse can be challenging. Beaumont took a lot of that burden off of my shoulders.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have started this position earlier!

Advice

My one piece of advise would be for all new graduate nurses to start in med surg, progressive care, or another step down unit of the hospital if they have aspirations to be an ICU nurse. There is no way that I could have been successful this position without the foundation I received from 2 years in progressive care.
