Corewell Health

Health Care Manager

May - August 2021 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I had the opportunity to shadow various areas that incorporated care management from different aspects (I.E. Utilization management, behavioral health, Medicaid, etc) prior to the start of my actual internship.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been in person, but due to Covid it was only virtual and telephonically completed. There were no in-person connections made.

Advice

I would say to ask as many questions as possible. There’s so much to learn and every clients situation is different.

CNA / unit aide

June 2020 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I gained lots of patient contact experience with dementia patients as sexual assault victims as well as more standard hospitalizations.

What I wish was different

I wish there wouldn't have been a nursing and CNA shortage. The more patients you have to take care of the less personal the job is.

Advice

Take time to talk to and get to know your patients. Often the most valuable thing you can do for them is to listen.

Residential assistant

April 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

Spectrum health is a phenomenal company to work for and the experience is amazing.

What I wish was different

Because I am I’m a specialized program at spectrum there are few employees and management expects you to pick up more than your scheduled hours and is rather rude about it. This is hard for a college student who Choose to work part time for a reason.

Advice

When working in healthcare and going to school it’s always best to work as much as you think you can manage and not let management sway you into working more for them.

To have patience, things are going to go wrong, these people cannot do things that you may see as simple. They lost that ability unfortunately and they need people that care to help.

Nurse Tech

June 2016 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I really like the patient care experience and the ability to work with other healthcare professionals. I have been able to build many strong resources and have met many lifelong friends here. I work in the ICU, so things can be kind of crazy at times, but it's a pace that keeps me busy and making a difference in the lives of many people.

What I wish was different

I mean, throughout college I have worked 12-hour night shifts, twice a week.. So, I definitely didn't study much on weekends.

Advice

If you want the hands-on patient care experience, I would definitely recommend looking into being a nurse tech. Scribing has it's pros and cons, but it definitely doesn't match up. In my opinion, techs are learning from the bottom of the totem pole and working their way up, whereas scribes just want to do anything related to doctoring and miss the crucial first step of learning how to empathize and work directly with patients...

May - September 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I got to see how hospitals were run. I learned lots of new things and met great people.

What I wish was different

I wish I didnt have to quit when the semester started. I had to work night shifts during the semester and it got too difficult.

Advice

If you want to be a doctor or go into health care, try to get in to a hospital volunteering or working so you can see how it actually runs, and it may be different than you expected and you may not like it so do it early.
