Staff Assistant

May - July 2019 • Greenwich, CT

What I liked

Helping children make artwork to bring home to their family and helping staff.

What I wish was different

Nothing at all. It was a great experience!

Advice

Having seen that the children that I worked with looked up to me, showed me that I was doing a great job as a helper. It also gave me a sense of responsibility. Teaching them to be fair with one another other, like who was going to use the colored marker first or who was in line first, asking for help with making a bracelet. It reminded me of my own childhood spent at the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich, and how even I looked up to most of the staff there. It made me glad to have been able and available to take part in these children's lives as a role model, and someone that they looked to be like someday.

Summer Fellow

June - August 2019 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I loved the opportunity that I received from the Boys and Girls Club to add a memorable experience for young boys and girls in my community. Additionally, I was able to make a few great friends that I keep up with this til this day and I am excited to continue to hang out with them all.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was able to get more hands on training or shadowing before I started the job. The first week was tough since I didn't exactly know what to expect.

Advice

Make sure you go in with an open mind about how your days are going to look and be willing to be athletic with the kids in the heat. the children in the club love to play, and they love it even more if you love it too. There wasn't a single day that i wasn't exhausted after a work day and drenched in sweat after recess.
