What I liked
I was able to plan fun activities for the students. Every friday was always a great fun day at work. In addition, there would always be field trips which would make this job more of a fun experience.
What I wish was different
I would say more the rotations would have been a little better if it was well structured. Overall, everything else was well.
Advice
One piece of advice I would share about this experience would be the environment. It was always a great place to be no matter the situation. There was never a dull moment and there was always something new to do every day.

Program Staff
June - August 2019 • Brattleboro, VT
What I liked
I got experience working with a large group of kids. I worked with at risk youth and had an opportunity to make a difference in their lives. I really enjoyed the people I worked with and thought they were intelligent and compassionate. I was inspired by them and I learned from them. I got to spend my summer outside doing stuff like swimming, hiking and playing games. I gained self confidence and leadership skills. I gained a per diem job as I was offered a position after my internship was over.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more role and responsibility. I felt like a glorified babysitter a lot of the time. I wish I had been able to design and run a program myself. Some of the staff were not cooperative and the summer could have been better if we were all on the same page.
Advice
Always be responsible and professional even if you’re working in a laid back place like the boys and girls club. Take pride in your work and others will notice. Use every situation to your advantage, because even this unpaid internship where I ranked very low on the tier looks great on my resume and provided me with lots of social networking contacts and invaluable career skills.

activity leader
May - July 2019 • Phoenix, AZ
What I liked
As an education major, I loved gaining experience working with children of different ages. I was able to be a role model and assist the children in having a fun, fulfilling summer.
What I wish was different
I wish I was able to approach the groups in a more educational manner. I would supervise them while they played games, but I wish I was also able to lead academic activities that would help me with my lesson planning skills/ teaching performance.
Advice
I suggest being open to trying new approaches. I was given the opportunity to be an activity leader and also a branch assistant. I worked with data entry and payments. It was a difficult job to do; especially since I had to deal with parents. Overall, it was a good experience because I was prepared for anything.
