Amazon

Area Manager Intern

June - July 2020 • Miami, FL

What I liked

It was great because I learned a lot about how an Amazon warehouse works from the inside.

What I wish was different

I would have liked for the internship to be a little bit longer to get more experience.

Advice

It is a lot of work, but you learn a lot about supply chain and operations.

April - June 2020 • Romulus, MI

What I liked

I liked the pace of the work, it was quick and there was always something to do. I also enjoyed my co-workers, all of them were great to work with and very helpful.

What I wish was different

The management and organization was not great, there were times I wasn’t completely sure on what I was supposed to be doing, especially when I first started, and had to get help from co-workers.

Advice

I would give the advice of preparing yourself mentally, as you will be doing repetitive tasks most of the time which can sometimes become a lot.

Software Development Engineer Intern

July - September 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Utilizing all the various services at Amazon, participating in team discussions and getting insights into the company, and actually working on a non-trivial project.

What I wish was different

That it wasn't actually virtual (although it couldn't be helped due to the pandemic of course) because i had to learn so many new things on my own. Of course I could always ask my team for help but it's not the same as just asking someone next to you if you were in the office. I think the virtual nature wouldn't be as bad had I been working in the industry for a while, but since I'm just an intern, it did have quite a few drawbacks.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask for help and/or feedback on how you are currently performing, as it is the best indicator of your current status regarding a return offer (if that is your goal). Ask a lot of questions, especially in the beginning, so your goals are clear and you and your employers expectations are properly set.

Program Manager Intern

May - August 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I loved that I was given real work that made an impact on the organization and not intern busy work. My project involved mostly external stakeholders (outside of my organization, not outside of the company), which gave me exposure to different roles, potential mentors, and a thorough look into the culture within the company. The compensation and relocation lump sum was also great. I had a really great onboarding buddy and mentor who were really instrumental in the success of my project.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more onboarding and training surrounding the role and the team I was on. I think that if there was more information surrounding expectations and how to meet them, success can be reached more efficiently. My internship was remote, due to COVID-19 and I wish there were more opportunities to interact with interns that took the time differences into account.

Advice

Understand that you may not be given the tools or training in the beginning, but don't let that discourage you from putting forth your best effort. Continue to ask questions until you get the answers that you need. Utilize the tools that you have to connect with people and network. Most people don't mind you sending an email just asking to have 15-30min chat and you can gain so much insight from those conversations. Even if they are not in your organization, still make those connections; it is highly beneficial in the long run.

Software Development Engineering Intern

May - August 2020 • Austin, TX

What I liked

My boss and teammates were very accommodating and made sure to include me in meetings. I was able to develop a service that would be deployed, and I was in charge of my own project. The work was challenging, but Amazon provided as much help as I needed to ensure I was successful. Compensation and benefits were very good.

What I wish was different

The only issue was that it was remote; everything was good otherwise.

Advice

Apply early, the interview process took me 2-3 months total.

Software Development Engineering Intern

May - August 2020 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

My team at Amazon was extremely welcoming and willing to help me in any way they possibly could. As a result, I learned a lot about the company and software engineering. I also enjoyed my project as I felt it was truly meaningful. It had real world implications and was ultimately launched into production.

What I wish was different

Due to Covid19, the internship was remote, and while I still virtually met with team members daily, I think I would have enjoyed meeting them in person and working in an office setting.

Advice

If you are an SDE, take your time at the beginning of your internship to learn about the different internal development tools before you start your project. It will pay dividends when you actually start implementing and testing your code. And of course, don't hesitate to ask questions.

What I liked

I liked the experience of moving to a new city and working in the industry, I liked the projects that I was assigned to and learning to work with a team within the industry

What I wish was different

N/A

Advice

Internships really illuminate what industry is like in comparison to university education which can be two entirely different experiences, with the internship it was a really great place to learn how things are outside school and you really get out of it what you put in, so apply to as many internships as you can, run through interviews with companies for good practice and opportunities.

Area Manager Intern

June - August 2021 • DuPont, WA

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to travel and learn more about the operations and industrial fields. I also loved working for a company that had so many resources.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a better internship program. This was the first time Amazon had hired sophomores and it was a rocky start.

Advice

Try to network at every chance you get and don't be afraid to mess up! You will learn the most by failing fast. Also, don't think you are better than everyone else. Even the hourly associates. They sometimes know more than managers. Also, they will be able to teach you!
