Wellington Management Company LLP

Competitive Intelligence Intern

June - August 2023 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Wellington has a special culture wherein I felt I was able to explore interests inside and outside of my team, and this exploration was highly encouraged. I was able to learn many technical skills in my roles as well as critical thinking, data analysis, business writing, and team work.

What I wish was different

Advice

Explore as many groups as you can while at Wellington - this is a unique perk of the firm in how they encourage independent exploration and curiosity pursuit.

Client and Product Strategy Intern

June - August 2023 • Boston, MA

What I liked

This was my second summer at Wellington, and I can definitely say the people were my favorite part of those experiences. Regardless of the team you're on, everyone wants to see you succeed. You're consistently encouraged to ask questions, meet with people across the firm, and are not only looped into actual projects but receive recognition for your input and work. Everyone I reached out to, whether on my team or another, made a genuine effort to get to know me beyond the scope of my work, in addition to offering advice/assistance as things came up. I cannot emphasize how motivated I was because of the support system I had.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I learned and grew more than I could have hoped.

Advice

I have two pieces of advice: ask all of your questions and network, network, network.

Undergraduate Intern

June - August 2023 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Interning at Wellington was, without a doubt, a transformative experience. Across all teams that I had the opportunity to collaborate with and hear from, everyone was extremely passionate about their work. Even as an intern with limited professional experience, I was given access to projects with measurable impact. One aspect that truly stood out to me was the open and transparent communication across the firm. Mentors were always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and offer constructive feedback.

What I wish was different

Upon reflection, it would have been great to have additional intern events outside of the workplace! Wellington did a fantastic job of providing interns with opportunities to interact cross-functionally during the internship itself.

Advice

Take advantage of the abundance of resources Wellington offers interns, write down weekly reflections, and be inquisitive!

InvesTech Intern

June - August 2021 • Boston, MA

What I liked

The people at Wellington are great. got a lot of resources like training, mentors, Udemy license to help me learn what I needed. The InvesTech Internship is also project based rather than apprenticeship based so I did a project with a bunch of other interns which was great. The project for my team was really interesting and gave us a good look at a lot of different sides of the firm. HR was really helpful in placing me where I wanted to be when it came to my return offer. We also rarely worked more than 40 hours a week.

What I wish was different

The internship was all virtual due to Covid. I work here full time now and it's much better to be in the office.

Advice

Possibly the best thing that's ever happened to me career wise. It's a great opportunity.

Business Intern

June - August 2022 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I loved everything about my internship. While applying, everyone talked about how special the company was, but I knew what I was hearing could’ve been too good to be true. Having spent the summer as a Wellington intern, I can safely say the company is as special as people say. The application/interview process was fairly straightforward. I applied on workday at the start of the school year and got continuous reminders on the status of my application. I submitted a single statement of interest that talked about why Wellington and why the specific teams I selected. For my particular group, I ended up having a one round interview with my manager in December and found out a few days later. Of note, I have heard the number of interviews can vary depending on the team/role you’re going for. As expected, the onboarding process was not the most exciting part of the summer, however, Campus Team made it as seamless as possible. We got emails regarding what was needed of us prior to starting (i.e., what forms to submit, background check, etc) and then the first week was filled with speaker series, meetings, and lunches all meant to get us acclimated and started for the summer. Throughout the summer there were plenty of organized events meant to bring the intern class and managers closer together like a Red Sox game and dinner. Because of everything Campus Team had planned for us, we were able to form actual connections and started to do things outside of work on our own! Every intern had some sort of project to work on for the summer, and whether it be a short or longer term one, it was used by their respective teams. It was super rewarding to learn that my work was being sent to the clients or used by the analysts on my team. On top of that, the interns were encouraged to meet with other people within the firm, which was made a lot easier with the help and guidance of our assigned summer mentors/buddies. Everything about this summer was extremely conducive to my personal and professional development. I cannot thank Wellington and Campus Team enough for the best internship! Already looking forward to coming back for the Summer 2023 internship!

What I wish was different

Absolutely nothing.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help. I felt like such a bother at first, but everyone truly wants to see you succeed and learn.

Global Marketing Intern

July - August 2022 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Throughout the internship experience I got the opportunity to reach out to numerous employees from both the Chicago office. Also, I really appreciated the intern networking events that allowed us interns to come together once a week and have a discussion with one another and form a network.

What I wish was different

The internship program had many of special outings for all of the interns. Most of the evets that were planned were in Boston, therefore, other interns stationed in other headquarters couldn't attend them. I wish that for the program that the Chicago office had a couple of more events for the Chicago interns.

Advice

My experience at Wellington was wonderful!. Throughout the entirety of the internship program I had numerous projects to work on that were all tailed towards my interests. Also, everyone in both the Chicago and Boston office were extremely friendly and open to assisting me with any resources that I needed. Lastly, the configuration of the office along with the employees helped contribute towards a feeling of unity that made me feel more involved around the office.

What I liked

One of the Wellington Management's core values is to develop and retain its talents, and it perfectly does that through hiring recent graduates, and provide them with resources to learn and develop the skillsets needed to perform their jobs. I like how each new hired individual, has its unique development plan and he/she will be assigned to work with a mentor to better adapt to the culture and environment of the company.

What I wish was different

Advice

Cultural fit is a huge component for Wellington upon interviewing. Therefore, make sure to ask as many questions as possible to learn more about the campus program, the team, and role you are being interviewed for in order to better help yourself and the firm to make the best decision.

What I liked

I absolutely loved working here, the culture is very welcoming. This was my first internship and I was nervous, but I felt comfortable asking for help from literally everyone I worked with and felt very supported. I learned a lot from my team and the other interns, and by the end of the summer I was sad it was over.

What I liked

I just started full time at Wellington about a month ago and I am loving it so far! Everyone here is so nice and willing to chit chat about just about anything at any time of day. Very welcoming and relaxed working environment

What I wish was different

There's nothing that I would really change about onboarding, base camp, or interviewing process. I thought it was a unique interviewing process that engaged me and I thought the same about onboarding as well as base camp!

Advice

My advice would be to try and make sure that you go to social events and optional events to meet new people. Also, try and meet up with the other associates outside of work!

Client Group Intern

June - August 2021 • Miami, FL

What I liked

The culture and the people that work here is really what makes this place unique. With all the bad reputation surrounding financial services firm, Wellington sets itself apart by following a humanistic approach and creating an environment where people care about each other. Beyond that, it is a huge asset manager and offers a wealth of learning resources and experiences.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions this internship was remote and I would have loved to be in the office but other than that everything was fantastic.

Advice

I would highly advise anyone to explore Wellington, even if you are not necessarily interested in investments and the markets because everyone in the company comes form all lines of work and backgrounds.

Early Career Investor Intern

June - August 2021 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Wellington is a welcoming, open-minded place with a flat organizational structure, which is unique and often under-appreciated for the industry. Wellington also emphasizes innovation and strives to improve constantly while staying true to its original mission and existing values. These aspects of the company, alongside an extremely well-developed internship program with engaging projects, experienced managers and mentors, and opportunities to collaborate across the firm and produce impactful work, created a great internship experience.

What I wish was different

For a 10-week program, the structure of the internship is very thoughtful and well-meaning, but may be more effective over the course of 11 weeks to accommodate for training and post-presentation feedback. While the training provided is incredibly valuable, the timing and duration of it affects the amount of time you have to be introduced to your team and work on your project towards the beginning of the internship.

Advice

Take initiative: ask questions, contribute to the conversation, engage in debate and learn!

I loved the people at Wellington! I learned so much, and met so many supportive people that exposed me to new ideas, resources, and projects. Summer Intern

June 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Interning at Wellington was one of the best experiences I have had throughout my college career. From day one, the campus team always worked to engage the interns and ensure we had all the resources to do well. I was given impactful work which I enjoyed and I had the opportunity to network with different groups across the firm. The internship was truly structured to help me learn more about myself but also the asset management space. Weekly speaker sessions, lunch and learns, and trainings allowed for a memorable experience. Access to Wellington's resources and intranet led to hours of discovery and learning as I could research about groups of the firm which interested me. Overall, my summer at Wellington left me excited to start my career and taught me a lot about myself.

What I wish was different

Due to the online nature of the internship, It was difficult to get to know my fellow interns and co-workers. I wish there were more social opportunities to bond with other interns in the cohort. Regardless, Wellington did a great job to make us feel that the summer was more than us just working from home.

Advice

I would highly recommend that one always ask for feedback and try to improve on said feedback. People at Wellington expect interns to ask for help, feedback, and clarifications when needed. As interns, I would say it is paramount to always have two questions to ask regardless of who you are speaking with and always be ready to recieve some constructive criticism. People at Wellington truly want you to do well and see you grow; however, you need to demonstrate that you want to make the most of your internship.

Business Intern

June - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Wellington Management provided me with an amazing internship. I was able to work on a project over the course of the summer under the supervision of my manager within the Finance Administration and Operations group. The summer culminated with a presentation of my work to managers and the other interns. Also, over the course of the summer, all the interns were able to meet with top executives and managers who were in various departments within the firm. This allowed me to get a full picture of the firm. It was an incredibly educational and enriching experience.

What I wish was different

Sadly my internship had to be online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite that, the Campus Team still created amazing virtual events where I was able to meet people from every department of the firm.

Advice

I would recommend to ask questions and ask them often. Everyone who works at Wellington was extremely willing to help me through my project or answer any general questions about the firm. Asking questions allowed me to learn about individuals' career paths, why they love working at Wellington, and what drew them to their current position.

Business Intern

June - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Wellington Management is known for its culture and it was on full display during my internship. People from all different departments within the firm are willing to set time aside to get to know you personally. I felt challenged throughout the internship and I didn't feel as if I was just an intern, but an integral part of the company during my time there.

What I wish was different

It was hard at times to get to know my fellow interns because of the virtual experience. All things considered however the Campus team made a concerted effort to make sure we felt like we were part of the larger Wellington family even though we were virtual.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out to anybody who may be in a role, or have had an experience that interests you. Everyone is more than willing to take time out of their day to get to know you so make sure to take advantage of it.

What I liked

The internship program was a great experience. Members of all departments at the firm, not just the campus team, were committed to supporting the interns - everyone was happy to connect and help me where possible. I really appreciated the emphasis on learning in all aspects of the program, from speakers to training sessions to members of my direct team, the whole firm showed a commitment to continued to growth and learning. I have come away from the experience with a deeper understanding of my work but also of other teams, the firm, and the industry as a whole. The work I did was relevant and significant which made me excited to log on for work each morning.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to meet my peers and all of those that I worked with in person, though I was made to feel like a part of the team and larger firm either way.

Advice

It can be daunting to reach out to people you’ve never met at the firm, but doing so provides great opportunities to grow and find out what you like and do not like. The insight of others at the firm is invaluable, so be prepared with questions, be invested in the conversation, and take advantage of their willingness to spend time with you. This firm is so great because it is full of people who care about what they do, so show that you do too.

Intern

June - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I loved the culture and the opportunity to learn. This was especially evident to me through the speaker sessions that were held throughout the summer where employees would (virtually) speak to the interns about their position and experience and answer questions. I also enjoyed the projects I worked on and the responsibility I was given. I learned a lot through collaborating with the team to complete them, and it was rewarding to hear how they impacted the firm.

What I wish was different

I wish that my internship had been in person instead of virtual, but Wellington did a great job running the program virtually despite the circumstances.

Advice

I would advise future interns to reach out and network with employees across the firm. Everyone within Wellington is extremely friendly, intelligent, and willing to talk.

Technology Intern

June - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

My favorite part of interning with Wellington was their excellent culture. Every person that I worked with or met throughout the summer was incredibly welcoming, kind, and down to earth. I was never discouraged to reach out to anybody to ask questions or just to have a chat. Also, the project that I worked on was very rewarding since I knew the program I helped create would continue to be developed and not just discarded as soon as the interns left. The workload was distributed well throughout the summer, and I enjoyed every day of my internship.

What I wish was different

I wish that I did not have to do my internship remotely, however, Wellington did a great job at imitating an in-person experience.

Advice

Ask for feedback early and often, and know that constructive criticism is there to help you become better.
