About Vineyard Theatre

Vineyard Theatre is an Off-Broadway theatre company dedicated to developing and producing bold new plays and musicals by both emerging and established artists. We are committed to creating an artistic home for daring and diverse artists, to nurturing their unique voices, and to engaging our audiences and community in dialogue by producing work that challenges all of us to see ourselves and our world in new ways, and that pushes the boundaries of what theatre can be and do. The Vineyard is one of the country’s foremost theatre companies dedicated to the creation and production of new plays and musicals.

Notable projects developed and premiered by The Vineyard include two Pulitzer Prize-winning dramas, Paula Vogel’s HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE and Edward Albee’s THREE TALL WOMEN and five productions that have transferred to Broadway – John Kander and Fred Ebb’s THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen’s [title of show], Bobby Lopez, Jeff Marx and Jeff Whitty’s AVENUE Q (Tony Award, Best Musical), Nicky Silver’s THE LYONS, and most recently INDECENT by Paula Vogel. Other notable premieres include Becky Mode’s FULLY COMMITTED (which ran for two years Off-Broadway and has had more than 100 productions around the world); Colman Domingo’s DOT, Jenny Schwartz’s GOD’S EAR, Craig Lucas’ THE DYING GAUL, Nicky Silver’s PTERODACTYLS, Anne Washburn’s THE INTERNATIONALIST, Julia Cho’s THE PIANO TEACHER, Christopher Shinn’s WHERE DO WE LIVE, Will Eno’s MIDDLETOWN, Tarell Alvin McCraney’s WIG OUT!, Michael Mayer and Peter Lerman’s BROOKLYNITE, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Pulitzer finalist play GLORIA, and many more.

Vineyard productions have gone on to be seen around the country and the world; in the fall of 2015, four Vineyard productions were running in London at the same time. Our commitment to innovative work has earned The Vineyard, our artists and productions two Pulitzer Prizes, five Tony Awards, 23 Obie Awards, two Oppenheimer Awards, and numerous New York Drama Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel, and Drama Desk awards. The Vineyard is proud to have been honored with a special Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Body of Work, a Drama Desk Award for Artistic Excellence, and the first-ever Ross Wetzsteon Obie Award for support of artists and creativity in the theatre. The Vineyard has also been honored for its leadership in our Union Square community and outreach to New York City public high school students with the Harvest in the Square Award and the Cus D’Amato Community Service Award.

“I liked seeing how an actual Off-Broadway theatre company worked behind the scenes, particularly in the off season. I was able to sit in on many actual production meetings regarding the festival they were hosting at the time. I learned a lot about the Marketing process as well from the Marketing director of the company. ”
