Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

It was a remote position so I had the flexibility to work from my house and anywhere I'd like! Also everyone on my team comprised of 4 different time zones so I didn't feel out of place while working. Also, the work was in frontend development, and I was perfectly matched to a team that centered on my skills.

What I wish was different

During the summer the Twitter offices were closed so I could not get in-person experience, which made it more difficult when considering the full time return offer since I couldn't see or imagine what going in the office would look like.

Advice

This internship cycle I was a lot smarter applying to internships. I applied to under 50, and they all centered on frontend or web development. My sophomore year I applied to close to 200 positions, all general software internships, and didn't get anything.

Communications intern

June - September 2017 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I liked the actual, real-world application of the work we did. Things on Twitter happen in real time, and that made the work never boring.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gotten more exposure to the rest of the company and other teams. Since it is a larger company, you can sometimes get lost on your specific team.

Advice

Reach out to people on different team across the company! Reach out early.

Engineering Intern

June - September 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I loved interning at Twitter. I think that they had a great support system for interns to learn and grow during their time there. I feel like I improved a lot as a programmer through this experience and was able to meet and learn from so many cool people.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to apply. I felt like I wasn't qualified enough but figured I would apply anyway because it wouldn't hurt. Don't let the fear of rejection or the thought that you won't get the job stop you from trying. Additionally, don't feel like you need to know everything to get hired. 90% of what I used during my internship, I learned while I was there.

Corporate Finance Intern

June - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The projects I worked on during the summer were meaningful and I actually had an impact. My recruiter and the University Recruiting team were always there for the interns and really made us all feel at home. I left the internship learning far more than I ever expected which is something I really value. You are constantly learning during the program from your team, other employees, and other interns.

What I wish was different

Honestly, there were no cons during my time at Twitter. My team was amazing and always there for me, as was my recruiter and the entire University Recruiting team.

Advice

One major piece of advice I would share which is something I learned throughout is to always ask questions. Asking the right questions allows you to learn and overcome obstacles you may be facing. I also recommend to speak to as many people as possible because it gives you a more holistic view of how the company runs.

Product Design

June - September 2017 • San Francisco, CA

Well-structured internship program and mentorship pairing. I had the opportunity to work on 2 product launches and a vision project. The design team is a family.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship to full-time conversion were more transparent.

Advice

Be proactive in asking for projects if you would like more responsibility. Be proactive in asking for additional mentors if you mentor is not available. Be proactive in experiencing your role on teams other than your own.
