I enjoyed meeting high school students interested in the medical field but also even for those that may not be interested in pursuing health care to at least present the good news about medicine and patient care and open the conversation in improving our health and wellness in our communities and in the nation.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more opportunities to do this and reach as many students as possible.
Advice
High school students nowadays are very technologically savvy and presentations like this should be as modern and current as their sources of information and meet them there and convey the messages.

Working here is amazing! The hours are flexible and you get to learn a lot from the PHD students and the graduate professors that work with you. They treat you as an equal even though you are an undergraduate.

What I liked
-- Worked with an advisor that taught me everything about what it's like to work in the field of research, how scientists across teams collaborate, how to code better, and so much more. I learnt so many soft and hard skills, I could not name them all. Truly the most fruitful experience because of the care and effort put in by my advisor into my learning.
What I wish was different
Hardly anything! At the beginning, I was really unsure where my research was going or what was to come of it so I felt that maybe the whole topic could have been introduced a bit better, but as I later understood, that's what research is like. Not knowing what's to come and simply taking every day as it comes.
Advice
Reach out to people in your department and ask for research opportunities as quickly as you can. I got involved in research end of freshmen year and I'm glad I did because I got to make more of the opportunity because of that. Most professors are more than willing to help, and if they can't, they'll guide you to someone who can. Very quickly, you end up meeting some of the biggest experts in the field, which you cannot take for granted!

I really enjoy how I get to interact with students each time I come to work, and I'm really thankful for Handshake being such an intuitive and easy website to use. It helped a lot during the time I was applying for Federal Work Study positions, leading me to the job I now have.

Nothing! Everything was straightforward when applying for positions.
Advice
Don't be afraid to get yourself out there and apply for positions and jobs you may not have originally considered. I made the mistake one year of college only applying to just a handful of jobs, and I didn't receive an interview from any, so the next year I applied to over 20 jobs and finally got an interview and ultimately landed the job. Applying to more jobs than one would think to apply to will ensure that your name is spread to many offices of employment.

This experience taught me valuable lessons in how to both be an effective leader and an active listener. It taught me that listening is as important when taking on a leadership role as actively facilitating any discussion or activity. I liked being able to work flexible hours, and being able to work very closely with my research advisor. I also, obviously, really enjoyed the subject matter.

Possibly it would have been nice to be in D.C. so I could have been closer to my advisor, but the Skype conferences worked just as well.

Definitely make a schedule for your hours-- flexible hours are nice, but it also makes it easier to procrastinate work if you don't stick to a tight schedule.
