I loved that my full time coworkers were willing to answer my questions and help me learn. I enjoyed that they gave me responsibilities to carry out and learn from. I often was sent out to work on my own. I felt trusted and felt like I was a valued member of the crew. I learned so much and was able to design my own little bed with annuals for the summer and then take care of it. That did apply to my internship objectives but my supervisor was willing and able to accommodate learning for me.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have learned more. This was more of a commercial landscape and less of a homeowner experience. I gained a lot of knowledge about overall care but it wasn't super specific to what I will be doing in my career.
Advice
If you like working outdoors primarily with one other person or alone and don't mind the weather then this is the place for you. I got all kinds of weather while working here and I learned to be flexible with what gear I brought to the job.

Software Quality Assurance Intern
August - December 2020 • Riverton, UT
What I liked
I loved the ability to work in an enviornment where most of my time was working alone on assignments. The reason for this was because the internship was remote due to COVID-19, but even if I was in the office, most of my work was very independant. However, I could ask my mentor and the developer questions anytime and they would get back to me quicky, that made my job a lot easier. I asked a lot of questions, and got wonderful answers. The hours were also somewhat flexible so that was great. The bulk of my job was exploratory testing, and it was very fun and challenging.
What I wish was different
I don't really wish anything had been different.
Advice
The "basics" should never be underestimated. If you master the basics of what you are doing, even if you don't know a lot of deep or advanced knowledge or have those skill yet, you will still be very valuable to your workplace.

Horticulture Intern
May - August 2020 • Nauvoo, IL
What I liked
I loved that I was able to receive experience in many areas of interest that I had and that it was not entirely focused on one aspect on my major.
What I wish was different
I wish I was able to be there longer and have been exposed to different seasons of the year.
Advice
My advice would be to take advantage of every opportunity you are exposed to, not just the ones that are comfortable to you or that you're initially interested in. I learned that I had interest in more areas than I thought which helped direct me to what I wanted to learn.

Quality Assurance Engineer Intern
May - August 2020 • Riverton, UT
What I liked
Working at the Church is an amazing experience. Not only is the work challenging, but I also loved my coworkers and the fact that we were all motivated in our goal to share the gospel. People were very encouraging and the managers were very supportive of me during my four months there; they always checked in on me to make sure my workload was bearable.
What I wish was different
Advice
At least for me (in the Quality Assurance realm), workloads often varied greatly from week to week since we had to wait for bigger projects to finish development. This might be frustrating to somebody who is not a self-starter. I would encourage anybody who works with the Church to use every moment that they have to improve something, be it a personal skill that will add to their productivity or a side project like our automation suite and documentation that constantly needed to be updated. There is always something to do!

Intern – The Joseph Smith Papers
May - August 2020 • Salt Lake City, UT
What I liked
I appreciated the Church History Department's flexibility in making a remote internship experience, functional, productive, and rewarding. I participated in a diverse range of projects within the Joseph Smith Papers, and it was a great survey of the different kinds of work the Department does.
What I wish was different
This is largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but I wish I had been able to meet my fellow interns. However, in a non-pandemic year, interns do get to meet each other, so there is no need to fear there.
Advice
My advice is to learn about how the department works and think of deep questions to ask about the experience. My supervisor was happy to answer my questions, but unfortunately, in retrospect I realize my questions were not as insightful as they could have been. This is an amazing opportunity to learn about history outside the academy, so make the most of it.
