About Stephen Moser Architect PLLC

Stephen Moser Architect (SMA) is an architecture and design studio based in New York City with a portfolio of innovative residences, civic-private projects, and ideas-generating competitions. Our work can be found in Colorado, Connecticut, Long Island, NYC, and Westchester County. The focus in all our projects is on making beautiful spaces that respond to the uniqueness of place, reflect and enhance how people live and work, and use high-performance materials and sustainable technologies. SMA seeks a clarity of vision: a relationship between exterior and interior that values simplicity, coherency, and openness.

We value collaboration within our studio and work closely with our clients to help them successfully realize their vision, regardless of the size of their project. As a full-service architecture and design firm, we take our projects from conceptual beginning through the completion of construction.

Residential projects include a house carved into the side of a mountain in the Colorado Rockies; a net-zero-energy beach house on Shelter Island, designed as a contemporary re-interpretation of a saltbox cottage; and a renovation of the mid-century modern Landsberg House on Long Island, for which SMA received an AIA award. Civic-private work: a master plan for a historic restaurant and environs in NYC’s Fort Tryon Park; and a comprehensive study for SummerStage in NYC’s Central Park. Competition entries include an award-winning design for an open park in Nogales, a city divided by the U.S.-Mexico border; and a contemporary art wing for MALI, the art museum in Lima, Peru.

At SMA, we believe that each project should be shaped by an elemental idea about its essence and purpose. That idea evolves from the intersection of place, program, material, and detail, but the design process always begins with place. From wooded park to urban neighborhood, the landscape guides us toward the character or essence of a project. In our designs, we always seek a clarity of vision: a relationship between exterior and interior that values simplicity, coherency, and openness. Architecture is a social art. Buildings are vessels for people, their things, their work, their leisure. Spaces must be easily navigated, furniture has to fit, art has to be seen, and equipment must work. We work closely with our clients to achieve their programs, using materials and detailing that reflect the idea of their project. In building our projects, we value technological innovation, sustainable design, and quality craftsmanship.

Architecture Intern

June 2019 - August 2019 New York City, NY
“Over the ten weeks I worked at Stephen Moser Architect I had the opportunity to work on several residential projects and attend site visits. The office is small and there is a very intimate working environment. I was able to ask a lot of questions and immediately felt welcome and part of the team. My experience was meaningful and I would recommend this Stephen Moser Architect to anyone who is looking to get insights into aspects of the practice of architecture you don’t normally get to experience at a short term internship. I really appreciated the responsibilities I was given, which allowed me to gain a lot out of my time here. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and felt valued as a team member.”

“The office focused on private residential projects, which allows me to experience every aspects of design, from conceptual to furniture design and selection. It is also very helpful that Steve assigned me a competition project alongside with the long-term residential project. During my time there, I have the opportunity to switch between task-oriented works and idea-driven works. I also developed my revit skills while I was interning at SMA.”
