State Farm

Insurance Claims Intern

May - October 2019 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

I enjoyed the professional corporate environment as well as the opportunity to interact with employees and VPs from different areas within the company. Interacting with the interns from the other State Farm locations was enjoyable as well, and the work was complex enough to keep me on my toes and make me feel as though I was making a real difference within the company.

What I wish was different

I wish the day-to-day schedule was a bit more strict; some days it felt like we were just wasting time because several components of our schedule had fallen through for some reason or another.

Advice

Come into the office every day ready to learn and pay close attention during training. Ask questions too! Everything you learn in training will be exactly what you do throughout the internship, so make sure you understand as much as you can.

What I liked

- Experience in any career field - Gained certifications to sell property and casualty insurance

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve stayed longer, but I had to end my internship and make more money elsewhere to pay for my summer tuition.

Advice

Study hard for your property and casualty exams. I was able to pass them the first try, but if you don’t, you have to pay to take them again. Passing the exams the first time shows that you’re serious about the field.

Insurance intern

May - August 2019 • Fort Lauderdale, FL

What I liked

I love being able to learn about the insurance industry and gaining new customer service skills. I enjoyed my coworkers and being about to learn how to reconcile a premium fund account as well as learning how to use an Electronic Customer Relationship Management (ECRM) system.

What I wish was different

I wish I would’ve started earlier as well as asking more questions. By doing this I feel it would’ve completed my experience and afforded me a higher job offer.

Advice

I would advice this for anything, always put your best foot forward. By doing this I was able to stand out to my employer and was given more responsibility. No matter what I do I always put 110% effort and I advice others too as well.

Sales Associate

May - August 2019 • St. Charles, MO

What I liked

The atmosphere at work made me feel comfortable and the pre-existing employees did a great job at not only helping me to do my job, but also to explain how a company like State Farm operates. You can learn a lot about the insurance business as well as good communication and sales skills working at a company like State Farm.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been given more opportunities to meet with businesses instead of speaking to possible customers as individuals. At one point in my time at State Farm, I was given a bit more responsibility to reach out to businesses but I wish it had a bigger project rather than just reaching out.

Advice

If I were to give one piece of advice, I would say to keep an open mind and to remember that the customer is always the most important. You don't have to go into an internship with State Farm thinking that you have to know insurance and lock it in as your career. Instead, take the experience as it is and do your best and I guarantee that you will learn a lot of helpful skills and become more knowledgeable about how businesses operate.
