Sales Associate

May - August 2019 • St. Charles, MO

What I liked

The atmosphere at work made me feel comfortable and the pre-existing employees did a great job at not only helping me to do my job, but also to explain how a company like State Farm operates. You can learn a lot about the insurance business as well as good communication and sales skills working at a company like State Farm.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been given more opportunities to meet with businesses instead of speaking to possible customers as individuals. At one point in my time at State Farm, I was given a bit more responsibility to reach out to businesses but I wish it had a bigger project rather than just reaching out.

Advice

If I were to give one piece of advice, I would say to keep an open mind and to remember that the customer is always the most important. You don't have to go into an internship with State Farm thinking that you have to know insurance and lock it in as your career. Instead, take the experience as it is and do your best and I guarantee that you will learn a lot of helpful skills and become more knowledgeable about how businesses operate.

Sales intern

June - July 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

- Experience in any career field - Gained certifications to sell property and casualty insurance

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve stayed longer, but I had to end my internship and make more money elsewhere to pay for my summer tuition.

Advice

Study hard for your property and casualty exams. I was able to pass them the first try, but if you don’t, you have to pay to take them again. Passing the exams the first time shows that you’re serious about the field.

Marketing

What I liked

Shawn Cockerham, the owner of that State Farm, was an outstanding person to work with during my internship experience. I was so thankful to be on her team. I learned analytics and marketing development, social media management and how to assist and be a remarkable employee at the office location.

What I wish was different

Initially, my original internship was canceled due to a miscommunication between my university and the business; however, HR sent my resume to all of their contacts in the Raleigh area; Shawn Cockerham called me to interview. I was glad to get the position, I just wish I would have been placed to intern for her initially, because I enjoyed my time there. The time gap to wait for a new internship was an inconvenience for me.

Advice

I would say to always be optimistic with expected and unexpected opportunities. I never thought that’d I’d intern at State Farm, but I’m so happy I took advantage of the opportunity because I walked away with new experience, knowledge and new friends.
