State Auto Insurance Companies

Technical Writer Intern

May - August 2021 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I liked that within my position I was treated essentially as a FTE. I was given a lot of leeway to work on what I thought would best help my team, and my team trusted me to get my work done by the time it was needed without much interference. I enjoyed being a part of State Auto's IT team and learning about computer engineering, which is something I was not at all familiar with before this internship. It challenged me to expand my knowledge and understanding of the way things work, especially since it was my job to document details about what the developers and programmers were working on.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a little bit more guidance in the beginning, but by the end of my internship, I felt that I was truly a part of the team and did work that benefitted everyone. I was lucky enough to do this internship remote, but I do wish that I had gained more in-office experience.

Advice

Take initiative. State Auto is extremely generous to their interns and does not require them to be directly guided by someone at all times, which means that at some points, you may find that you need to find something to do. They trust that you will find something to do, so don't be scared to take the initiative to do so.

Actuarial Intern

May - August 2019 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

Management explained complex ideas well and they were able to explain and guide me through my projects. No dress code, flexible hours, and in-depth discussions with the senior leadership team were very useful as well.

What I wish was different

There were troubles with technology at the beginning of the internship.

Internal Audit Intern

May - August 2019 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

This internship was an amazing way to learn more about auditing, insurance, and State Auto in general. I learned so much and everyone I met was extremely nice and willing to help if you had any difficulties. There was a large amount of autonomy in our own specific projects which was a great way to learn and produce meaningful work. There is no dress code and the culture is very relaxed but motivated for success!

Advice

Be ready and motivated to learn a TON, work on a team, and get work done. Don't be afraid to make mistakes/ ask questions because it helps you learn
