Stanley Consultants, Inc.

Structural Student Intern

May 2020 • Muscatine, IA

What I liked

Stanley Consultants puts as more effort into the internship and new member experience than any other job I have had. They are interested in helping you progress and learn the most about their company possible. They also had multiple meetings where interns got to hear from the leadership team which I have never seen before. IN terms of work experience all of the projects I have worked on have been directly related to things that were covered in school. This aspect will be very helpful in pursuing my professional licensure as this company allows its engineers to continuously learn and grow. Overall, the company has been great to work for and unlike anything I have experienced so far.

What I wish was different

This was out of the companies hands but since the internship happened during COVID-19 I never went into the office. However, the company was able to fully function through the pandemic and never slowed down showing me stability that few companies have.

Advice

Stanley Consultants wants what is best for it's interns and new members so ask plenty of questions and don't be afraid to reach outside of your comfort zone.

Electrical Engineer Student Intern

May 2020 • Jackson, MI

What I liked

It is a very hands on internship. Roy, my manager, wasted no time bringing me onto current projects where I had actual things to work on. It was great seeing a markup I made get reviewed by a designer, then sent off to graphics to be made into an actual drawing that was submitted to the contractor! I gained invaluable experience with different pieces of software, each of which have a very specific role in substation design. I also really enjoyed how much Stanley cared about their interns, since they did not cancel their program during the COVID-19 pandemic, but instead migrated it to be remote and even shipped us interns equipment!

What I wish was different

Due to COVID-19 everything was understandably remote, but going into the (new) Jackson office would have been great!

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, everyone is more than happy to help and it is better to ask a question now instead of waiting later and having it come back to haunt you.

Electrical Engineering Intern

June 2020 • Des Moines, IA

What I liked

I had the opportunity to work with experienced engineers in an area that was new to me. Everybody I interacted with in the interview process and during the summer was motivated in their job and willing to help me with mine.

What I wish was different

Due to Covid, I spent most of my time working remotely, although I did get to do in-person inspections of a project. I would rather have been in the office with the team, but we made the best of it.

Advice

The members of Stanley do good work, and they will expect the same from you.

Electrical Engineering Intern

January 2020 • Muscatine, IA

What I liked

I started my internship over winter break, before COVID, which was a great way to get familiarized with the people I would be working with and the work I would be doing. During the summer my internship was virtual, but due to the resources and friendly co-workers at Stanley's the transition went very smoothly. The group I worked in had a weekly meeting to check base with everyone on project status, which was a great way to keep in touch with others virtually. I was able to contribute to on going projects in a value added position. Overall a great experience!

What I wish was different

I understood having a virtual internship, but it would have been nice to be able to meet and interact more with the other interns.

Advice

Try to get an internship at Stanley's! I really enjoyed my internship.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2020 • Austin, TX

What I liked

Stanley consultants is a great company to work for, especially as an intern. I was surrounded by friendly yet extremely professional coworkers who were always available to answer any doubts. The tasks that I was assigned required problem solving, conceptualization, and collaboration to be completed. So there was never really any menial, uninspiring work. Being a member owned company, the care to employees from Stanley Consultants really shows.

What I wish was different

My internship began when COVID became a global phenomenon. Thus, my internship was understandably virtual (I still got to do field inspections). It would have been nice to work in person.

Advice

Have an open mind and be willing to learn new things. Consulting requires voraciousness of knowledge and the good news is that Stanley Consultants provides multiple resources to learn new things.
