Conference Assistant

June - September 2019 • Stanford, CA

What I liked

On the work side, I developed a lot of the professional skills useful in an office type workplace; filing, organizing, checking guests in and out, keeping track of financial records, and working in a team. I also, however, got to know a whole team of new people who became my friends. It made coming in to work every day something enjoyable.

What I wish was different

Some of the systems for, for instance, temporary access cards or lockout keys are a bit archaic. They're all on-paper, written in a binder, and every time someone returns a card, we have to search through pretty much all the entries to check the card back in. This would've saved a lot of time and prevented stress if the system were digital.

Advice

Get to know your coworkers! First because, obviously, you have to work with them, so at least make an effort to be nice. But you might also meet some really special people and friends that way, and regardless, it'll help you work better together as a team.
